read up on how to convert an x to perform like an r for the advantage of having electric start. does anyone have any practical experience with how the wide ratio trans would be an advantage or a disadvantage in a flat track or ice racing situation?

I don't think you would notice much at the 450 power level. For the money and engineering and frustration, a 450 RX would be the right bike.
