I don't know anyone who has tried adapting a 09 to earlier years , but i could suggest what i did on my 02 which also has a long muffler (much longer than the 07 was by far) , which is drill out the rivets on the rear of the muffler like you would to change packing , then measure the muffler size your wanting to duplicate (in my case it was the 2005 muffler which was 4" shorter than the 02 muffler if you can imagine that) , then i cut the muffler shell and inner core with a Sawzall and installed the cap again with new rivets
I would guess if you shortened your muffler to the size of the 09 that your bike would be significantly louder due to the dramatic change in length , you might want to think about a re-pack of the muffler at that time as that would be the best time to do it''
So rather than trying to "adapt" a 09 muffler to your bike , i would say you would be better off altering your muffler that is made for the bike , to the size you're wanting (within reason , as the shorter the muffler , the louder it will be , you don't want everyone pissed because your bike is obnoxiously loud , so keep that in mind , as that is what gets riding areas closed down) , but cutting it so maybe only a few inches is sticking past the number plate would get the results you desire without waking people in the next county
As a example my cut down 02 muffler is now 3" beyond the tip of the numberplate , as opposed to the 7" it was prior to altering it , which is noticeably obvious when looking at the bike , and much more appealing to look at now
