    Synthetic oil

    by Rtowne » Sun Sep 18, 2016 8:04 am

I run Mobil 1 in my other bikes and would like to use it in my CRF. The mechanic who installed the 305 big bore kit told me I shouldn't even think about it in a motorcycle engine. I know there are a lot of pros and cons but will it really damage the engine? Keeping them all on the same oil sure makes things a lot easier.

I wouldn't think of anything but synthetic.
That mechanic must be smarter than the rest of the world.

    Here's the thing about oil.
We are all creatures of habit. We like to use whatever we used before.

The dirty little secret is-nobody has ever heard of, or knows of a case, where any engine ever suffered an oil-related failure due to the actual oil used, when something close to the proper specified weight was changed on a maintenance schedule close to what the manufacturer specified.
I'm not talking about a mechanical impediment to lubrication, such as a bad oil pump. That can hurt any engine regardless of what oil was used.

So, you will hear emotional responses to oil questions, and the following phrases:
XX has always worked for me
I've used XX and my engine runs great
    My mechanic recommends XX
My bike runs better on XX

All of those phrases could be substituted for any brand of oil. It is no secret that synthetic flows a little better at start up, and therefore starts to lubricate and protect a second earlier, and holds up to heat abuse better. That's an oil type criteria, not a brand-specific function.

    Ok, let the arguing begin!!

Use whatever you want, in the weight and change frequency specified.

    Modern oil works great.

You are completely correct, but that's the only exception.
