Did valve adj. Started bike - got buzzing - cam chain?

    by kneedrag32 » Wed May 23, 2007 10:46 pm

So I did a valve adjustment on my 450r, started it, and for the first 10-20 seconds of idle, there was a buzzing sort of noise... it sounded like the cam chain. After the 20 or so seconds, it went away.

Is it possible that my cam chain tensioner was loose, then sprung tight again? ... or was it something worse?

    Any thoughts appreciated.

    Thanks.

PS: This was my first time doing a valve adj., however, I was extremely careful and quadruple checked everything... or so I think!

Welcome Kneedrag. Did you follow the proper procedure for adjusting the cam chain tensioner? Are you sure that the buzzing was coming from the engine and not a cable, clip, etc buzzing against the frame somewhere? If the noise is gone, I'd double check cam chain tension and wouldn't worry about it...

It's about the only thing that could "buzz" without hearing a "crack" shortly after it... Lol.

There's a cam chain tightening procedure? I swear the manual doesn't say anything about a cam chain tightening procedure.

Hmm... I just took my "key" (that held the tension off) out and let it spring back. Screwed the cover back on and that 's it.

That's the procedure. Some people just remove the entire tensioner when doing jobs like this. I do it, and then upon re-installation, just remove all the tension and then let it spring back to the proper tension.

Sounds like your good to go...Braaaappp!
