As the title says, I need some help. I just bought a bike and when it arrived the serial number had been scratched off! Is there any reason to scratch off the serial number of the frame?

Two reasons:

1) Makes the bike about 1 gram lighter for racing.

2) Keeps the Police from knowing who was the original owner that the bike was stolen from.

I second Agent Most likely a stolen bike. I had friends i used to hang out with that would steal honda and acura engines and would destroy the serial or vin numbers to hide the original owner info.

It is nor totally scratched off. Do you have to have the whole number to find out year? It looks like it has been scratched with a screwdriver, so maybe I can lightly sand it and see more of the numbers. Any suggestions.

That is why stuff is stamped not engraved.

These idiots can grind off the serial numbers, and the Police can still get the numbers.

When metal is stamped, the grains of the metal are smashed. This goes deep into the metal underneath the stamped area.

The stamped area can be polished smooth and then an etchant such as Keller's etch (hydroflouric acid) can be applied to the metal. The areas where the grains have been smashed will turn darker and the number will become apparent.

Can I buy the acid somewhere? I need to find out what's up with this bike, or buy a frame with a title off of ebay or someone.

Personally wouldn't shrug it off as funny. In case you don't know, "receiving stolen goods" is a felony. You don't have to be the one that stole it, just the one in possesion of it.

Don't think you will find any support here on how to mask a stolen bike and I sure don't see any other reasonable explanation for what you describe.

Karma buddy, what goes around comes around. My advice is to contact the appropriate authorities and ask for help determining if it is legit so you can register it, or turn it in so it can go to it's rightful owner and be thankful you only lose the cash associated with its purchase. If you get caught with it and it is stolen, you will be out a whole lot more money than what you spent purchasing it and won't get any sympathy from any of us.

This subject is far from funny, and that bike is far from legitimate. There's no reason in the world to scratch on a serial number.
Some poor guy went to his garage or vehicle and found his bike that he paid for or was paying for gone.
Do the right thing and get the cops involved. Doug

Roady lets see it was back in high school I never said I recieved anything so quate me on that. and I had nothing to do with it.....so feel free to accuse me of anything I'm not part of. And like i said it was over 8 years ago if I had done anything the statue of limitations would kick in.

On other note I never said it was funny it sucks I had cars and stuff stolen from me...not cool. Everything I have owned has be legit and paid for by me. So go quate me all you want

Trying to make a point about someone with what sounds like a stolen bike asking what to do.

Apologize if I took it to far with you. A bit over zealous perhaps attempting to make a point. I did not mean to imply you (or anyone on this tread for that matter) is a thief.
