    usfs spark arrester

    by bernkell » Thu May 17, 2007 6:56 pm

Awhile back I received a ticket for not having a spark arrester on my son's CR85 which it was stock and I thought they had to meet certain criteria to even be sold but it is considered a close track motorcycle so I paid the ticket and bought a usfs approved spark arrester my question is how far back do they go is there a website I can go to to see if my kids old 1974 MR50 is exempt from age.It did not come with one that I can tell there is no screen.I am not going to look for the ranger that wrote the ticket he was not the nicest of guy's.I play by the rules I don't want them to have exuses to close area but if it is exempt I want a what we have a statue # so I have a leg to stand on I think he would try and right it any way. sorry about rambling Bernie

I dont know about AZ laws, so I dont know if there is such a thing as a g-father clause..
check on the muffler and see if there is something stamped on is saying USFS....
if not, you might need to get one that is.

Here is MI, it doesn't matter how old the bike is. If it isn't equipped with a s/a, then it's illegal. The can will have some indication that a s/a device is installed in it.

I am fairly certain that there is no grandfather clause when it comes to spark arrestors. When I did a search on it, it says "all bikes will be equipped with USFS approved spark arrestor". So, I guess all bikes means all bikes. ;)

Sometimes it can vary from Sheriff to Ranger and the mood they are in when they check you.

I was with a group that had been stopped by 4 dual-sport riding Sheriffs. They checked each bike's exhaust with a long thin rod. If they hit a screen, they OK'd the bike. They didn't care if it was stamped USFS approved, only that it had a screen. Two of the bikes had closed course pipes with an aftermarket end-cap/screen.

The reason they stopped us was we had wandered onto private land.

That was a ticket for all of us.......vehicular tresspass. "Have a Nice Day!"

I have gone round and round on that one too. I tell them that I wouldn't be trespassing if there wasn't an unblocked trail heading in that direction. But that hasn't worked yet.

Nice avatar pic BTW. Dirty smiles. Nice.
