    How to check Transmission Oil

    by hondaTim » Thu May 10, 2007 2:25 pm

As far as I know you have to change the oil to 'be sure' what the tranny level is. Is that right?

Is there any 'trick' or plastic thing I can buy to check oil level?

Anyone know if there is a third party tranny case cover with a window in it to check tranny level?

I have a 05 450x. Not knowing the oil level drives me nuts and I dont change the oil after every ride.

    thanks!!

Check your owners manual. The transmission has a check bolt hole. Clutch cover area, you should have a bolt with a phillips slot in the head just below the aluminum plug cap that close to your water pump.
But with that said, please use a full quart of oil on the transmission and not the .69 qt. or 650cc that the book calls for.
Your trans will not loose or burn oil like the motor side can.??? By that time you would have changed the fluids again. Motor will use .74 qt w/filter change, and the trans uses a full qt.

The trans. hole check method doesn't always work. If you find yourself scratching your head wondering why none has come out, don't worry. Just put in a full Qt every time and all will be good.

Dads got an 05 450x that I take care of and there is a 10mm bolt between the bottom timing plug and the clutch cover this is the check bolt the way i did it (prior to factory fill) was to put most of the oil in then take out the plug (with the bike upright if you dont have a center stand lean it up) and fill it untill it comes out.

and fill it until it comes out.

Better watch that one, that's exactly how a lot of people have thought they were full, they weren't, and they've burnt up their transmission.
That is why we say to just thoroughly drain your transmission fluid in a 450X, then just pour in a full quart. There have been no ill effects, no extra oil "blowing out", no problems whatsoever I've ever heard of. Doug[/quote]

I recieved a notice from Honda on how to check trans oil. it says run the motor for 3 minutes, wait three minutes then pull the bolt and fill till oil comes out.
The reason you run the motor is to distribute the oil to all the nooks and crannys. If you check it cold it may be full but in reality it is a low oil condition.
To be safe and easy just put in a full quart.

We run about 820 cc (ml) in the 250X.

Thanks -i was running 800ml -so i wasnt too far off - alot easier than waiting on the check hole to find out if there is enough in .

I figured that since the Transmissions were of similar design, running a bit more like the 450X wouldn't hurt anything.

    A full quart is 946ml.

820 ml fits nicely and gives enough room for expansion without blowing any out so that's the number we've gone with.
