    Helmet radio set ups.

    by Pullhigh » Mon Apr 30, 2007 7:58 am

Is anyone using any sort of helmet to helmet communicatios for trail riding. My neighbor and I ride trails with our kids alot, maybe too much sometimes... lol And it would be super nice for the adults to be able to communicate. I usually ride lead and and 1 or two of the kids seem to always stay right behind me. My neighbor usually rides rear and is always way behind, usually picking up bikes or waiting on our slowest rider. I try to find good places to pull off and wait, but sometimes it seems like we wait a long time for them to catch up. It would be nice to know that it's just slow riding and that noone is hurt or anything while waiting.

Any suggestions on communications systems, prefferably with some good range?

I don't use any comm when riding off road. But, I wear a Chatterbox on the street. It's a pretty good product. It has two way and it is voice activated. You can also plug in MP3/Minidisk/radio and listen to music, then when someone talks it cuts out the music and you can hear them. You can fit the ear pieces into your helmet right next to your ear.

I actually use the same set up as we have on our street bikes. I just put some velcro on our helmets and mounted the radios. I primarily used them when the kids were younger to help them ride. Like elbows up, knees in, look up, shift - things like that. Thinking about maybe we should be using them again, them kids are just too darn fast and end up waiting for me and dad to catch up.

Should have added that it has the features like PPT or voice activated. I usually had the kids on voice so they didn't have to worry about pushing a button to talk. Sometimes that wasn't a good thing when they got scared because all I heard was a blood curdling scream and couldn't tell them how to handle the situation. It was usually one of those times you wish you had a camera! :D

We have helmet radios. There is a headset inside the helmet then a cord that plugs into a walkie talkie that we carry in our camel packs and then into a switch on the handle bar. They work great, no interference from the engine noise. My husband usually takes the lead and I the rear ( usually have 7 riders) and it has saved my behind many times, he tells me when riders are coming, big ruts etc. and I can tell him when riders are down or stuck. You do have to push the button to talk. As soon as DH gets home I will find out where he bought them. ( we have had them for 3 years now and still working with all my crashes) They are not chatter boxes.

That's it for now. No fun getting lost in the desert. GPS is great if you remember to set it before you leave camp. I'm still learning to work it, if Jeff goes down we're in big trouble.

When are we going to ride again? We'll be in Dove Springs for Memorial weekend.

Baja Designs is where my husband bought the head sets for the helmets. Purchase your own walkie talkie. He said the chatter box didn't work well because of the voice activation. We highly recommend them and think that it would work great for your situation.

I don't know what we are doing for Memorial yet. It would be nice to get away from here and try something new. My son and I are going to Silverwood this Saturday. Give me a call if you guys want to meet us. I don't remember if you have my cell so I will PM it to you.

I've been using FRS walkie Talkies and throat mikes. They work great. I have two Midland FRS radios which have a VOX feature. Just set them to VOX and when ever either one of us talks, it transmits.

The throat mike simply clamps to the the neck.

The nice part is the FRS radios are cheap (I got mine for free) and the throat mike only picks up the voice and not the sound of the bikes.

Where did you get the throat mike?
I've got a whole bunch of radios, some PTT some with VOX. I'm sure I can get something to work, the throat mike sounds interesting. 8)
