    TRADING '05 CRF250X

    by JTL64 » Fri Apr 06, 2007 7:58 pm

New to the forum - have a local bike enthusiast that is chomping at the bit for me to trade my 2005 CRF250X (exceptionally clean with custom suspension, etc) for his 03 CR250R (also exceptionally clean). This guy already has the CRF450X (street legal) and wants my 250X for some unknown reason.

Here's the dilema - I am 43yrs, like to ride supercross track (adreneline junkie) - bought the 250X from a local guy who put approx 45 minute on the bike (got a smokin' deal - that's why I bought the X model) vs. an four-stroke R.

The CR250R is more geared towards my style of riding, but would I be giving up the house by making such a trade? This guy works at the shop where I maintain my bike (honest and has become a casual friend) and has been hitting me up for my bike since I first bought it. I might add that he is 60yrs. and stated to me that the CR250R is too much bike for him.

Would it be prudent to trade an 05 four-stroke for an 03 two-stroke?

Need good advice from the forum.

Sorry you didn't get a response yet bud.
With both bikes exceptionlly clean, my opinion is you need about 1200 bucks cash minimum to make that deal, and I'd really want about 1500. A four stroke with electric start is worth a thousand more than a two stroke motocroser if they're the same year, let along the two stroke being two years older.
Compared to the other 03's 250 two strokes, the CR250R is 'okay', but nothing special and with some idiosyncrasies, like with the powervalve cables .
Being a Honda it's well made, but it's just had a weak engine compared to it's competitors for quite a while now, not in power because it's got plenty, but in erratic delivery of the power and very touchy jetting. Doug

    Thanks Doug,

Actually, I've been communicating with JAWS & Monkeywrench on another thread during th past several day and rendered the decision to keep the 05 CRF250X based on a lot of good information; furthemore. You are right on spot about the difference in monitary value from the 03 CR250R. I agonized over this for a week (or more) and when it came down to it, I realized that my intuition (which is usually correct 99% of the time) was trying to tell me something - I finally go hold of my senses and let go of the crazy notion.

Furthermore, yesterday I ordered a JD Jetting kit, a couple of new drive gears (to change up the bottom end for MX tracks), and am going to add a few more mods down the road as needed. My bike has already been set up with a custom suspension and a couple of other goodies since I purchased (got a great deal on this bike). It's plenty for my liking, and I feel good about my decision to keep this great bike! In a couple of years I might opt for a 450; however. I am go to go for the moment! BTW - I like your bike, check my baby out!

Well your baby sure looks good to me.
I could own one of those, even being a 6"5 and 1/2 inch, 258 pound guy I have loved riding 250X's every time I have ridden one. It's a flat out fun, refined, ride bike.
Wait'll you ride it with that airbox open and JD kit installed.
I rode one last summer that the guy had installed the power up kit just like the Honda bulletin says, except he had the stock exhaust with a ProMotoBillet end cap and a JD jet kit .
He installed the R cam, airbox mod, just like the bulletin says. I couldn't stop smiling, just a really sweet bike.

    Doug,

Here's a picture of my 250X with my son's RM65 (very hot little rocket)!

I too completed the airbox mod (cut the top out completely), and removed the backfire screen, replaced with an upgraded air filter. Am looking into the exhaust change, will probably do the cam mod by mid summer.

Man, what I would have given to ride that little Screaming Yellow Zonker when I was the right size for it ! It looks great.
You're in for some pretty cool experiences.
One, when you ride your bike with that jet kit/airbox mod done.
The second will be when you install the 250R cam. You get a bunch of extra jets with the kit. When you install the cam just e-mail JD and tell him what you have now installed and what you're doing (adding the cam), and he'll e-mail you right back with recommendations that'll get you right in the ballpark .

Yeah Doug - I am looking forward to the first ride with the JD kit in the bike! The R cam sounds good too, and I plan to get this in the bike by no later than mid June (possibly sooner). My son (8trs) is 50" and was a little short for the RM65 initially; however. I dropped the fork tubes 1", added the Kouba Link 2" drop kit, re-set the race sag - what a difference it made for my son! I've got his clutch perch & shifter tuned precisely for his hands and left foot! It's amazing what a little tweaking here n' there can do for the handling characteristics! He's a confident little rascal.

Currently, it's been raining pretty heavy here - but when the track dries out, I am going to get some action shots of my son launching off the tabletops!

I'll send updated photos of my bike as the mods pile on!
