    Sound Testing FAQ'S

    by redrider911 » Wed Mar 21, 2007 8:34 pm

Our district will be testing the decibel levels of the bike exhaust this year at all the races. There are a few people being trained to do this so someone is available at each race.

I need your help!!! I am starting a FAQ cheat sheet to give to each person to help them answer questions. PLEASE ASK ANY QUESTIONS!! I will post the answers as I find them out.

    Here is how it goes.
Our bikes will be brought into a area suitable for testing. A microphone will be placed 20 inches from the tail pipe, off to the side at a 45 degree angle. Bike will be reved to a certain rpm (measured by a tach) and then decibel measurement will be made.
    Thank you for any questions.

    Hi

The Enduro season is about to start here in Oz and they will be enforing noise limits

This year its 103 dB and next year it will be 94 dB !!

So all the after market exhausts will be disappearing soon

What is the limit in your area ?

The limit will be 99 for this year and next. 96 after that.
Aftermarket companies make inserts that will lower db's by 3 and headers 1.5 to 3. So if you have an aftermarket there is options. You can always get a Q series which is 94 - 96 db. I would have figured enduros would have a spark arrestors and quiet pipes right from the start. 103 db's seems crazy!

They are fairly lax on spark arrestors but a lot of guys convert MX bikes to Enduro - h/light and tail light etc etc and they are noisy ...

Plus a lot of num nuts equate more noise with more power/speed

A lot struggle with the 103 dB so its gunna be fun watching them tone down to 94 dB !!!

Much stuffing of things down sauce pipes ....
