    spark arrestor issue

    by crfbeginner » Sat Feb 17, 2007 6:00 pm

i asked a while ago about how to put a spark arrestor
on. i haven't tried it yet because i'm afraid to do
damage when drilling out the existing stock rivets.
i saw the link from here on putting one on, but when
i tried to to the same thing with my drill it doesn't
seem to latch on to anything in order to take out the
rivet. i don't want to push to hard where i push the
    rivet further in.
anyone can help? i don't want to take it too a
mechanic, i got all the tools for this job. just
    want to be careful.

drilling it out is not really about "latching" on to anything. you are using a drill bit sized for the rivet that will drill out the top/core of the rivet. once the top and core are drilled out you can push the rest of the rivet in so you can free the end cap.

Like Ken said. I use a drill bit just a little bit larger than the hole in the center of the rivet. Drill it until the top flat part of the rivet comes off. the Inner piece will then push in and end up in the packing material. When you get the end off I use a pair of needle nose pliers to remove the pieces.
