title question.. what can i do?

    by dustinjamesz » Sat Feb 10, 2007 11:29 am

ok so i bought a little 50 from one of my friends, knowing he does not have the pink slip for it, thats my first mistake.

he bought it from someone on ebay who didn't give him the pink slip. what are my options? i've called DMV and they say i cannot register it without the pink slip.. someone told me i can claim to have got it from someone that lives in hawaii because they don't use titles there or something?

any information that can help is greatly appreciated

Not totally for sure, but I think a local dealer can help you with a certificate of origin. I'd start there. You can also try the "salvage title" angle. At least the will get DMV working on finding out who the "owner of record" is. However, be careful! I suppose if the previous owner (before your friend) is unscrupulous, they could report the bike stolen and then you've opened up a whole new can of worms. Might be in your best insterest to just keep it, ride the hell out of it, and be done with it. Good luck!

In Idaho if it's not licenced, it doesn't have to be titled.

Tell the DMV that the owner(your cousin) gave you the pink but you lost it. Request a form to replace the missing pink. Fill his name and sig on the form and list your address (its your cousin right, living with you right?). They will sent a replacement pink in his name, fill out the information for releasing the interest in the bike and submit it to the DMV to get it in your name. If you try to do it honestly the DMV will screw you, thats why they are the DMV, to screw over people. Your buddy better not have stolen the bike and it better not be reported stolen or you are screwed and the police will be dropping by to visit you.

the stolen part is the part i don't want to know about lol but i guess there is no way of knowing unless i call the DMV and have them check the VIN.. but either way i can't really take it out to any parks without it registered right? one of my buddies said he could just register one of his old bikes and give me the sticker but i don't know if that is wise...

anyways thank you for everyones quick replies i appreciate it

also, if i got a bill of sale, that would clear my name wouldn't it?

Putting a sticker on your bike that belongs to another bike is DMV fraud, and a felony. Go to your local PD, be honest, tell them you bought a bike without paperwork and give them the VIN to check it. If it comes back stolen expect to cough up your buddies name or youre going to the pokey. Like you said buying it without papers was a BIG mistake.
