    A nother Valve ?

    by red4life » Tue Jan 09, 2007 7:17 am

Everytime i adjust the valves on my 04 250x (well had to adjust for the fourth time since new) The bike is really hard to start. Then when it fires it starts very easy. Just wondering why it takes a good 15 mins. of kicking to get her to fire everytime i have adjusted the valves.

This is a compression problem, because it restarts when hot more easily, right ?
Look in your service manual and do a compression check with the engine cold, and do it exactly as the manual describes.
Note also what the manual says compression should be. You're going to find the compression low.
Either carefully read the manuals instructions on setting the decompressor clearance and try it, or back it out until when you hit the starter you get a "clunk"-too much compression for the starter to turn it. Then, screw it in an 8th turn at a time until the starter WILL turn it, and re-check compression.
A pound off is no real big deal, anything more is.
If the decompressor isn't off, either you need a piston ,a piston and a valve job,or your valve shimming is off because timing wasn't right when you shimmed.
Regardless, hard to start cold but easier to start hot is going to be compression related.
Don't disregard the simple, cheaper possible fixes, ever, until they have been absolutely ruled out. Doug
