Your jetting has a whole lot to do with it, because we don't hear much about 40X's over heating, especially with the too lean stock jetting replaced.
Try this, and follow the directions in the box:

I run water-wetter with the factory Honda coolant. Never put tap water in your bike, will corrode the aluminum. Never have overheat issues, even in Mojave desert. I agree with other guys, check jetting and also make sure ignition is running correct. If your timing is off it could easily overheat engine or cause detonation! I know this sounds basic but check your oil frequently. Even new hondas will burn some oil, especially at high rpms. Remember your engine holds less then a quart! So if you burn even a ounce it's like being a quart low in a V8. Good luck Bro. :D

On my 450x I use engine ice and I changed my radiator cap to a SRC High-Pressure Radiator Cap 1.6. Ever since I made these changes I don't have any overheating ssues.
    Thanks,

I think he was making the point that here in California our bikes are sooooo lean to pass emission standards that jetting could be an issue.

A lean bike runs signifigantly hotter than a properly jetted one.
