    Exhaust for 2006 CRF 250X Do's and Don'ts

    by rstappenbeck » Sun Dec 31, 2006 6:56 am

I have a 2006 CRF 250X and am wondering who makes the best slip-on exhaust with the best gains and can you put a twin pipe on the x's? And if so what are the gain differences between the single's and the twin pipes?

    Thanks

    Welcome to the site!!

The best overall pipe IMHO is the White Bros E2. Slight power gain, lower weight, spun aluminum construction.
Still retains low noise and a spark arrestor.

Duals would be costly. You would have to convert a lot of stuff to a CRF 250R. Rear subframe, rear fender, modify seat pan, Airbox, battery box, relocate the coolant overflow bottle, get the header, and exhaust from the CRF 250R. You would be into thousands of dollars for little or no gain and would lose the sparky.

I wouldn't bother. Get the White Bros E2 or just modify the stock exhaust and wait til you smash it before spending money on the exhaust mod...

The E2 is a great pipe with a lot of fans, but there are a lot of good pipes out there.
I agree with AS, the cost for the twin pipes would be prohibitive,I'll bet you'd spend over 1500 bucks to do it.
There's so much you can do to increase the 250X's performance. Where to start though is the jetting, if it's stock and so is your airbox your bike is nowhere near where it can be.
This works great for everyone who has used it, and the directions to mod your airbox are included :

The airbox mod is necessary to realize the benefits of the jetting change.
A lot of guys have also installed a HotCams camshaft with great results too. Doug

You said something about modifying the stock exhaust, how do you do that?

    Thanks

There is a removable baffle in the end of the pipe.

You can access the Torx screw from the bottom side at the end of the pipe. The baffle can be removed completely if sound is not an issue. Spark arrestor stays intact in the muffler.

The baffle can be modified and reinstalled to gain the flow and power advantages without a serious increase in noise. Simply cut off the disc on the end, and drill a 1/2' hole in the remaining disc. Reinstall.

Heed Dobents advice on the JD jetting kit. Do the airbox mod (cutting the top off), Change air filter to the TwinAir Powerflow, remove the backfire screen, do the exhaust mod, install the new Jetting, and you will have a new bike.

It really makes a huge difference in power and response.

Just wanted to let every one know that I just got through pulling the baffle out and where it looks like there is two caps on the stem itself (a end cap and it looks like there is a second one about a inch up) I first drilled a 5/16" hole and didn't feel as if that was enough so I went ahead and drilled a 1/2" hole, still felt like that wasn't enough, so I cut the end cap off, tried that with a start up and then a run up the road came back and the 1 inch of tube that was left up to what looks like a second cap I went ahead and cut the inch of tube off flush with and left the second "cap". It works awesome!! It gave it a little more "growl" as far as the sound goes, but it really helped on the "roll on power", taking off in 1st gear normal and then rolling on the throttle the front wheel came right up (without feathering the clutch), then in between gears I let the front wheel come down to the ground and switched into 2nd gear and rolled on the throttle and the front wheel came right up again!!! That's what I'm looking for!!!

Thanks to everyone who helped and I hope this will help someone else.

Glad it worked. I actually drilled the 1/2" hole in that second disc "cap". I cut the first disc off and the "pipe" holding it on. It made a nice difference on mine as well and just saved $ 400.00. and it looks stock so the Rangers don't give you any hassles.

    Did you rejet as well?

    Open air box?

all these things should be done together.

If the bike is too lean it can cause longevity issues.

    .
    This is serious stuff bud.
I'm glad you feel an improvement, but AS isi telling you the gospel here.
If you've got stock jetting you haven't experienced anything yet, and opening the pipe without fixing the jetting and opening that airbox can have your engine doing the 'slow cooker' thing.

    Hey All,

I have not rejeted yet but I did order the JD Kit like dobent said, I am suppose to go ride tomorrow should I go ahead and modify the air box now or wait til I get the jet kit? And if I ride tomorrow will that damage anything since I already modified the baffle?

    Hey dobent,

I clicked on the link below where you were telling me about modifying the baffle and it takes me to the Jet Kit link, was wondering if I am missing something?

    Thanks

Defintely wait for the Kit. You are already lean and modifying the air box, etc will make it leaner.

    You can ride tomorrow.

I think he meant that the instructions for modding the airbox come with the kit. If you want to see a bit on how, look here:

    http://crfsonly.com/howto/450x/airbox/c ... airbox.php

Process for the 250x is about the same.
