So just what exactly are you going to do when you raise the numbers? I suggest that before you do any fiddling with the ID number you contact the local law enforcment agency that does VIN verifications. If you live in California the local Highway Patrol office or better yet the Division Vehicle Theft Unit. Have in hand any paper work that you might have regarding the purchase and any witness thereto, a good description of the person from whom you made the purchase and any contact info that you have re the seller. Expect to be grilled as if you are the suspect and expect to have the bike seized until such time as it can be identified and its status determined.
DO NOT TRY TO SELL THE BIKE TO RECOUP YOUR PROBABLE LOSS. DO NOT put any money into the thing. DO NOT go back to the seller and confront him. If you have purchased items for it and have installed them; have receipts. Better yet remove the parts that you may have purchased and installed and be able to produce receipts if your residence is subjected to search. Have the bike in the same condition it was in when you purchased it when you take it to be inspected. Have your ducks in a row and be forthcoming about the purchase. Expect to lose the bike and the money for the purchase.
If by some chance there is a reasonable explanation for the damaged VIN and the bike is not currently stolen and you get it you get it back expect to pay impound fees. It does not look good for you as far as keeping the bike. If it is not stolen; lucky you. If it is; lucky for the guy from whom it was stolen. Either way do the right thing and let law enforcement do the work of raising the numbers and investigating the potential crime.
Your best bet is to be a good witness Good Luck

Sounds like good advice from either a current or former LEO.

Besides, the attempt to raise the numbers might be construed as an attempt to alter evidence.

The local Law Enforcement Agencies probably have a lab guy who can do this for you. Saves you from having to "Buy acid" which could be another felony if you buy the "wrong" acid...

EASY!!! I purchased this bike off ebay. I am checking with ebay now on what I can do. The seller keeps telling me the title is in the mail. I don't have any paper work that proves purchase, just all the ebay stuff. I thought that ebay checked serial numbers and titles on auctions. Guess not. Well the guys account has been suspended and he will not call me back now. I received the "We will contact yo within 24-48 hours" line from ebay. So I guess it's hurry up and wait!!

How much info is in the motor serial number? It is still there. Also I have all but 2 numbers on the frame. I will see what ebay does and then call the cops. Thanks for the help!

I hope you can nail the sucker if it is stolen! I hate a thief worse than almost anything.

Sounds like good advice from either a current or former LEO.

It sure does and is. I bought a seat from this idiot on E-Bay. 8 days go by after it's paid for via PayPal,and I hear nothing, that's lousy service.
I let him have it and hear from another guy who bought a frame from the same guy, who sold him a frame, and guess what ? Why, the evil cables had 'rubbed off' the VIN. Was the BS light ever lit up by then, especially so because don't you know the frame buyer hadn't ever gotten the title. Finally at 12 days I hear from the guy and he acts all hurt and p.o'd. He eventually did send the seat . I got it at 16 days after payment, and he has the nerve to give me a bad feedback.
I got ahold of the Sherrifs dept. where he lives and told them the whole thing,I sure don't want a stolen seat. I don't know what ever happened but the whole thing sure sounded fishy to me. Doug

Had a 89 Wr 250 stolen in 94, 97 got a call from the sheriff's office gladly paid a couple hundred to get it back. a couple new parts and an obvious top end, along with the bike being very clean and well maintained tells me the guy who got caught with it was most likely not the thief. he still went to jail for getting stopped for not wearing his helmet. Bad luck for him good luck for me. I loved that bike even more after getting it back . I would sure hate to be the poor sap who paid cash for that bike then attorney fees and or jail time.

On other note I never said it was funny it sucks I had cars and stuff stolen from me...not cool. Everything I have owned has be legit and paid for by me. So go quate me all you want

Trying to make a point about someone with what sounds like a stolen bike asking what to do.

Apologize if I took it to far with you. A bit over zealous perhaps attempting to make a point. I did not mean to imply you (or anyone on this tread for that matter) is a thief.

No worries roady just wanted to say I didn't think it was funny and that I had nothing to do with anything like that ever.
