I agree, there is no way I can ride when it is above 90. The dates Jawbone, Dove Springs,Spangler,Johnson Valley are closed for red sticker is from May 31 to Sept.1..that is just three short months. There are other places open all year. 230 Dad, reconsider the 250R because I'm sure your son doesn't worry about going to work on Monday or paying the mortgage. Is there anyone he knows with the 250X and the 250R so he could ride them and compare? There is a world of difference.

I don't think twice about going up the hill...It's the coming down that scares me.

as stated before... red green who cares? when you cant ride a red sticker bike in the desert it is way to hot. and when you cant go in the mtns. it is to cold anyways. i ride my 450r form oct to may in the deserts then some trails in the summer or at the track early in the morning or late afternoon

I would definitely think about the 250R. I am 17 and just bought a 2005 CRF 250. I can go anywhere my dad goes. I love the track with my cousin and with my dad i do technical single tracks in the mountains or just mess around in the desert.

Sure the dez is too hot when the red is no longer valid, but a red (or more accurately, the lack of a green) also keeps you out of the areas you can ride in the summer months, like Kennedy Meadows or the San Bernardino mountains.

I'll say it again, a 2 stroke 125 is THE skills building ride.

Good to see Kennedy Meadows is year round now, but you will see my point that many of the cooler temperature mountain areas are closed to red stickered bikes from May to October.

Like my local haunt Rowher. It used to be red until March 31st, now it goes thru April.

Roady...Ya I fully understand your point. Getting back to the original subject, I wonder what bike 230dad has decided for his son? My husband took his new bike out yesterday to break it in, just putting around but he really noticed the difference in weight. One bad thing is there is no kick stand and when a quad crashed into me on the trail yesterday he had to lay his new white bike on the ground to come scrape me off the pavement. I'm sure that was a very hard decision for him to make. [/quote]

i think he is to big for a 150 i myself am 13 and riding a CRF230 i would definitely get him a CRF250 4 stroke or a 125 2 stroke it would be risky on trails because that bike has some definite kick that he might not be used to he would be the right size for the 250 thought but he might not be satisfied with it for long even though the yamaha YZ125 is about 4 inches taller than the CRF230 and the 250 is about 3 or 4 inches taller than the 125 for your self i would sell his 150 and your 230 and get you a 250 2 stoke and get him the 125 go with yamaha for the 125

    moving up

    by chv » Mon Mar 19, 2007 8:02 pm

I moved my son up from a 150F this Oct to a 250X, basically the same weight but way much more bike. He is now jumping further and riding way more to his abbility than before. Plus if he does drop it, he can still get it back up and start it with the electric starter. He's only 5'6" or so and ways 120"!!

Here's the update sports fans. I bought a 2000 CR250R for $1800 yesterday. Here is what I got for my dough:

    - white aftermarket plastic & original plastic

    - 3 gal. tank

    - Renthal Fat Bar handlebars

    - FMF pipe and silencer w/ spark arrestor

    - black seat cover

    - extra brand new front tire

    - 5 gal. gas can, some case oil & pre-mix oil, spark plugs, new tailpipe packing, small in-line fuel filter, extra nuts & bolts

    - apair of Thor boots, sz. 11

    - and he is dropping off a new rear brake disc tomorrow

What do you think? (Pics in my garage)

My only hesitation is I have not owned a 2-stroke since I was 11yrs. old (Yamaha 60). I have no idea how to maintain it (buying service manual soon). The thing is a rocket and I'm afraid my son will hurt himself of worse. I told him he has to take it easy but I know as soon as he's out of my site, well you know! I hope I don't regret this choice, my son' safetly is paramount. Now I get to worry every time he leaves camp. Maybe I should have gotten 125 instead, but he thought it was a step back. We will see.

Sounds like another good application of the Leatt brace! :)

You do realize that the CR250R 2 stroke has the power of a CRF450R only instead of it being smooth and controlable it hits all at once, don't you??

The CR125R has the same power as a CRF250R, same applys.
