Halen-having been born in 1965 and learning typing "the old fashioned way" on an IBM Selectric in middle school should give us something in common. I empathize with your frustration, but you have to look at it within the context (emphasis on "text") of todays technology.

I could never understand all of the abbreviated posts that pop up from time to time until I viewed one of our employees "texting" on her cell phone on her break here at work. It has become a new form of communication that to us "seasoned" folk may seem like a completely foreign language. Remember collegiate dictionaries? Now there is spell check. Further proof that technology is making our lives easier/more challenging in all facets of our lives.

You are only old when you truly close your mind. Spending time with my 7 year old son enforces that philosophy everyday. ;)

Well said Van. I could not have put it better, with one exception. They speak and write English in England, that's across the Pond. You guys speak and write American. There is a no such word as ALUMINUM or NUCOLOR, but nuclear and aluminium are out there;)

Hence the saying: The Americans and English are two countries divided by a common language!

I think we should dub this new language... 'cyberlish'
All the character's come from a system known as the 'interbet' and can be placed in any order as long as 'phonically' it sounds good. Or someone could write a program (similar to spell check) that will translate this 'cyberlish' into 'Ing-ga-lish' so we can all communicate on common ground.

I have a friend that moved a few hours away that e-mails me often and he used to use the short-cut school of typing words. After awhile I got tired of trying to figure out what he was trying to say so I started replying back the same way, but worse. It didn't take him long to realize that his way was not all that cool after reading my posts, so he now writes to me using the correct spelling of his words. He still doesn't use capitalization, but I can live with that. I sometimes wonder if it's all the text messaging that is causing people to lose their ability to spell.

I agree, I 'short text' all the time on my cell phone text message. I also pay per character so it makes sense.
My gal manages a cell phone company. She was training a young guy for an asst. position and she asked him to send a note to head office concerning some issues. An hour later she had the district manager at her door with a copy of the email. No capitals, spaces, spell check, or punctuation was done... and the young feller had no idea why he didn't get the job.

Eighteen years ago after a lot of hard labor, I finally decided to get a decent job. I realized that I never really learned how to spell or write correctly, so I spent a lot of time using a dictionary to learn how to spell all the words I had been previously misspelling. I started my new job at the bottom and after many years of college classes I was able to work my way to the top position and run my department. I was glad I finally learned how to write and spell, as I wrote many memo's to other department heads as well as documents to my staff. You can get away with writing sloppy to your girlfriend, but you'd better be prepared if you want to move up the ladder someday to a better paying position.

I think it all boils down to context, and where you are posting/texting/communicating. If I were a first time poster here, I would look at the majority of the (clearly typed) posts and follow suit. If I were using a cell phone to text and save $ on per character billing, I would probably abbreviate.

With respect to posting here, I guess we can either "flame" em' or "train" em' :D .

If a person can't write a basic sentence correctly, why would someone waste their time trying to talk/write that person through something technical?

I couldn't agree more,it's just such a lazy way to write.
I can't take that cyper speak crap seriously at all, it's lazy in the same way that ebonics is a lazy way to speak.
Our country's decline in comparison to other nations academic wise is no joke, and "cyber writing" reflects a lot of negative things. Doug
