    ‘17 250R Clutch Noise

    by JeffB007 » Thu May 21, 2020 11:14 am

Low hour bike maybe 20-23 hours. Noticed a faint noise coming from clutch when pulled in. Noise gets louder when put into gear. Clutch functions great! And makes no noise once let out. Changed oil in trans side today and still getting a noise under same conditions. I can take a video tomorrow if anyone is interested. Anybody have any suggestions on what I should do next?

Welcome to the site !! \:D/

What I would do is lay the bike on its shifter side , leaning the bars on your bike lift stand if you have one , or a 5 gallon bucket upside down , then remove the clutch cover and the 6 clutch bolts and pull all the metal and fiber disks , it is possible one of them is broken , it is a common issue on the new gen bikes ...

Okay thanks for the info I’ll pull the cover tonight when I get home from work. I’m a heavy truck mechanic so I work until 11 at night. I have a 0-150mm caliper would my manual give me any specs for the clutch plates and steels?

    Yea .... 9 ft. lbs. / 12 N-m , Tighten in a criss cross pattern in 2 or 3 steps , same as a 5 lug truck tire

And you might want to recheck , this is straight from the Owners Manual

No broken plates thank god. Don’t see any weird wearing or excessive wear on anything except the last steel which contacts the two steel rings that center the first clutch plate I assume that’s the noise I’m hearing?

Its possible , that is the Judder Spring , my opinion is the first chance you get , go to the dealer , get a extra fiber plate , remove all the Judder Spring crap , and replace it with a regular plate , your clutch will last longer ..... That is the first thing I am doing when I get my new 450R , is request a extra clutch disk , and put that in before I even ride it ..... for the life of me I don't get why Honda won't go back to the 08 clutch , everything since has been iffy at best .... especially since the introduction of the Judder Spring ..... and the 4 spring clutch .... that was sad .........

Anyway , How is your clutch lever free play ?? , I see no reason for a rattle , and if everything checked out , it might be a adjustment issue , if it is over adjusted it might cause the clutch to override and that might be the noise .......

Also , not sure if you still have the cover off , but try pulling the lever with the cover off and see if you notice anything (with the bike still laying on its side) when the lever is engaged/disengaged

I did operate the clutch lever before and after I put everything back together. No binding or noise when operating. Feels very smooth. I can fit a quarter between the lever and perch easily and still have a touch more room before you start moving the clutch.

Only other thing that comes to mind , and I doubt it is a issue with such low hours , is if the basket is wobbly

Another thing I would think of is the Clutch Lifter (the part where the clutch rod touches and pushes just under the Pressure Plate (the cover with the 5 springs)

The last thing I would suggest is change the tranny oil and then add 1 full quart , instead of just 3/4 of a quart as the manual says , it won't hurt anything , and may cure the noise , it may just be a case of "normal" noise and the lower amount of oil amplifies it , it is what I do with both my bikes and have since I have owned them ....... if you are not seeing metal shavings (other than normal clutch plate wear silvery looking oil) then I doubt something serious is wrong , at least at this point , so unless the noise intensifies , it might not be anything to worry about ..... :-k 8-[ :?
