    Pro circuit camshaft question

    by Denucchi » Mon Sep 23, 2019 5:37 pm

Hi , I'm rebuilding an 05 crf250r stock (ex for pipe ) for my nephew. In doing the valves I noticed a chip on the cam so gonna replace . Found a pro circuit cam used and wondering if I were to replace springs would they have to be pro circuit or are other brands comparable? Kibblewhite full spring kit is half the price as pro circuit . Wondering if springs are cam specific . TIA

Welcome to the site !! \:D/

I would personally contact Pro Circuit and give them the part # , or look it up on their site if its still available , it will tell you in the specs if it needs special springs or not , but , they can tell you for sure if you call them , as they make a ton of different cams , and they would be best in giving you a definitive answer , I know with HotCams , the Stage 1 and 2 you can use stock springs , but Stage 3 I believe requires heavier springs ... , so again , the cam profile will be the deciding factor .... let us know what you find out , that way if someone else has the same question , there is a answer .....

Thank you , I did contact them first before buying cam and was told I SHOULD be fine with stock ,twice to be sure . Turns out not true. Right on their site for the cam it states "MUST use pro circuit springs with this cam". Pulled the trigger a little early due to I figured couldn't go wrong with the manufacturer answering question about there product . I just want to simply swap cams due to stock cam had a little chip in it. come to find out today it was from the kibblewhite spring breaking at the end. So need springs now anyway.

Weird .... Did you talk to a Tech or a Sales person ??? , seems a Tech would have known , or at least checked before answering you ....... :-k , I guess that is why I prefer Hotcams , customer Service is excellent ... , Same goes for Race Tech for suspension , when I have a setup I can't figure out how to make better , I call them , and they will go as far as to ship me any shims I need that I don't have on hand for free ..... been that way since I started using them ......

But yea , if you had any kind of spring failure , then replace them , the metal gets into the internals of the engine , and it will destroy a lot of stuff fast .... like I said , most of the "milder" cams usually take stock springs , but when you start bumping up HP and compression , etc. , then its best to swap out with matching components , my 450X has stock springs and a HotCams Stage 1 and stainless Intakes , my 450R has just a higher compression piston , and I swapped springs when switching to Stainless Intakes , because I rev that engine more than my trail bike , so the stock springs could float , on my X its highly doubtful I will go above 7,000-8,000 RPM max , the R gets revved out more ..... That is how I judge if its a priority or not , if my X were to have a Stage 3 Cam , I would have replaced the springs and been required to ....... You are doing the right thing ..... ;)
