    250r hard to start

    by cellamare624 » Mon Sep 21, 2015 9:26 am

08 crf250r has big Athena big boat kit.I sent it to a shop and had a bunch of work done to it i brought it to professional mechanic, timing chain, oil seals, flywheel bearing, checking/shimming valves, ect. Well I took it riding and when I would shut it off it would not start until she was cooled down. Once it was cooled down it starts 1-2 kicks but it I shut her down hot no luck at all. Any suggestions?

I'm assuming you are using the hot start lever to restart the bike when it is hot?

Open the throttle and keep it open and kick a lets say 10 Times. And after that hand off throttle and pull the hot start in..se if it starts.

Throttle wide open and kick 10 times very slowly or with the kill switch pressed. You don't want the engine to start. You're basically performing the routine for clearing a flooded engine, then trying to start normally using the hotstart (as you should be when the engine is warmed up).

Ok thank yall, yes I do use the hot start lever while I kick it and nothing. So I've attempted with out using it and didn't get any further. I've shut the gas off, leaned it over for a few then tried that as well and nothing either. If it is flooding itself out what would cause that to happen??

Improperly tuned carb. Could be as simple as your fuel screw adjustment. Try pulling the hot start lever and slowly opening and holding the throttle open a bit to see if it starts (you don't want to whack the throttle open because the AP will add more fuel to the mix). Make sure your choke plunger is closing fully as well. If it is stuck open, that will richen the mixture as well.

Would the accelerator pump mod have anything to do with it?

No. The AP mod prevents bogging when snapping the throttle. It sounds like you're running rich, so I believe it's either a jetting issue or something sticking open (choke) or closed (hot start), or not adjusted properly (fuel screw). When you first start the bike when cold, does the choke behave normally? Meaning does it cause the RPMs to rise significantly when you pull the plunger and fall significantly when you close it?

Yes the choke does work it just doesn't like to stay popped out so I have to hold it and when I let it go back in the rpms die down normally. The hot start lever when the bike is running and I pull that lever the bike does run differently.

Okay. Sounds likes those things are working properly. Is your fuel screw adjusted to 2 turns out? I would also check the valve clearance yourself to be sure it is within spec. And make sure the float is set to the proper height.

I'm going to do a thorough cleaning tomorrow when I get home from work I was having an issue with my 09 running rich it was spitting and sputtering horribly took carb apart and there was a ton of dirt inside of it so maybe something similar is happening to this one but it runs great when is running it's just when its warmed up it doesn't want to start until it's cooled down its wierd

If you have lots of rubbish in the float bowl consider pulling the tank off and cleaning it out and flush out the hose.
The only other place stuff gets into carb is through the intake side and that doesn't bear thinking about.
