04 crf 250r engine cuts out when warmed up

    by Cbridges28 » Mon Feb 16, 2015 12:29 pm

    Hi guys,

I have a crf250 r 04 model. Lately when I have been riding after about 30-40 minutes of use the engine cuts out when I'm coming to a stop even though the clutch is pulled in. I was told by a man with a lot of experience with bikes that it might be the clutch. So I replaced the clutch plates. But left the current clutch cable in. The next time I went out on the bike I experienced the same problems. After pretty much the same time it started to happen again. However, I noticed that the engine was cutting out after I eased off the throttle( clutch out) aswell as when the clutch was in. I was pretty frustrated but kept riding. As It went on the bike got harder to start (kick start). My oil was changed in November but it's only had about 8 hours riding time since. Also I had half a tank of fresh fuel in when it was cutting out. I'm baffled and pretty miffed as my sessio.ns are being cut short. Hopefully someone can help me.

    Cheers guys

    Chris

I believe (was told) this is likely because of tight exhaust valves. The exhaust valve shims need to be changed.
This should likely be similar problem to very difficult to cold start the bike.
    My bike does both symptoms,
    - vary hard to cold start
    - any time let off the throttle it cuts out/shuts off so have to always rev

I'm changing my exhaust valves tonight and will let you know if fixes it.
    Mine's a 2005 CRF250r

    Sorry for the delayed reply.
I was just looking over some old posts cleaning things up and saw that I said would post back and let you know if improved.

    Yes, very much improved!
Correctly shimming the valves (mine only needed the exhaust valves shimmed the intake were within spec) helps with better cold starts and now it does not cut-out shut-off when not giving the bike revs, it's runs much better.

If you have some time it's worth while checking and correctly shimming the valves and it's very cheap and easy maintenance.
I probably spent more than most people because I bought the complete hot cams shim kit for $100 but this way I have all sizes readily available to do continued maintenance (just saves the drive back and forth from the local shop to swap shim sizes - which some do even for free if you give them your old shims).

    Best of luck!
