New (old) bike with starting problem

    by NCLR1 » Thu Oct 24, 2013 9:10 pm

Been awhile... picked up a 2006 CRF250R for a steal. Has issues starting. Would love to get it running without a big price tag.

Bike starts ONLY with the hot start pulled in and no choke. Idles, revs, no problem as long as the hot start is pulled in. Any ideas?

used bikes are famous for having two issues that make them difficult to start: 1. valves not clearanced to spec. 2. carbs that aren't functioning correctly. start with checking the valve clearances and then replace, yes, replace the jets. check the float is fully functional and the float height is set correctly.

Did that, valves were out of spec. Shims were way too small. New jets. Bike runs great now.

New problem now. Bike leaks oil from the sprocket area when the bike is running in gear not just running. Looks like oil might be coming out of the sprocket area??? I got the bike from someone who had the bottom end replaced after locking it up due to lack of engine/trans oil. When he got the bike back from the shop it had a jacked up carb so the owner took the carb apart. Couldn't figure it out so he sold it to me for cheap. Along with the bike I got a snap ring that the guy said he cant remember its location back on the bike. Hope that is not why it's barfing oil.

Oil seal behind sprocket is a easy fix , simply remove sprocket and pull seal out (there will be metal shim to hold sprocket away from case it needs to come out first), pry seal out , and replace with new , check the metal shim for a wear grove if it has one , put the groove to the outside so it wont tear up the new seal , then plan on replacing it eventually

As far as the snap ring goes it could have come from several places , the best bet is to look at the engine parts fiche and try to match it , it could mean just removing a side case , it could mean tearing the entire engine down to trace it out , usually if there is a snap ring , its there for a reason so i would be hesitant to continue to ride it unless your prepared for a major engine repair when/if wherever it goes to cuts loose and creates havoc , not saying it will happen , but its a good possibility

Start looking here for the snap ring

    The parts should be #3-#35-#36

Thanks for the tips. I had already pulled the sprocket off and yanked the oil seal out. I can't get the collar to come off though.

I also just went ahead and purchased a new collar, seal, and d ring. Not sure who to remove d ring, guess I'll figure that out when I get the collar off.

I talked to the previous owner today. He was very specific when he stated that the clip is left behind from his removal of the carb. I can't find any clips that would be in this area except for the gear shifter clip??? Anyone else have any ideas? My plan tonight is to measure the clip and compare to the part details from the fiche. Hopefully I can match it up that way.

Replaced the oil seal, collar, and ring. Still leaks??? Can't tell if it's exactly from behind the sprocket or it's somewhere else and it's getting thrown up onto the sprocket/chain.

Bike has a new problem now. It misses or hesitates when cruising at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle. No idea what it is but the hesitation is sharp.

Could it be leaking from the clutch pivot arm ??? , that is right above the sprocket and might look like a countershaft leak

For the hesitation , you are riding without working the throttle (just holding it steady) and it cuts out then resumes ? , or is it sputtering ?? , does it do it once in a while or constantly while cruising at that throttle position ? , and it does not do it in any other than 1/2-3/4 throttle position ?

Oil leak fixed. Replaced front sprocket seal again and it doesn't leak now.

After replacing all the jets except the leak jet and doing the AP rod wiring mod, the bike still hesitates. It does not hesitate in neutral no matter how hard you crack the throttle. Really nice response. But, when riding the bike and just cruising at half to a little less than half throttle, the bike surges and hesitates really bad. The bike revs up to cruising speed nicely, even maintains WOT well. But cruising speed is very bad.
