    What is JCL 378 etched on head

    by Bigbird » Sun Oct 06, 2013 1:21 pm

    I bought a used 07 R head that has the letters/numbers JCL 378 etched on the side. Anyone know what that might signify?

    Thanks

    Do you have a photo. Even new heads from honda will have some hand engraved writing. Depends on where it is and what it looks like. Post a photo and i'll be able to tell you.

    Here is a picture of the etching. It is located on the right side of the intake side of the head.

    that appears to be a typical engraving from the factory.

    I've never seen any hand engraving like that from Honda. Thats dremel quality right there...

    Typically, something like some porting work may have been done on it and someone left an identifier.

    JLC378 = "rider initials"+"race number"??

    This is exactly the point of my query. I can't see any obvious grinding, polishing or any kind of porting. It looks stock to me, but with this etching, I am not positive. Probably, it is an extra head an amatuer or pro may have had as backup. I bought it off EBay from an individual in Connecticut.

    if needed, i can show you brand new heads direct from honda with these same type of hand engravings. not all have them but many do. not sure when it started or why but they are there direct from the factory. we have seen some heads that have had head work done by others with similar engravings but typically not in the same location.

    Thanks again. I'm not trying to create a major discussion, just curious as to what I may have purchased. I am of the opinion it is a stock head which is what I wanted.

    no worries. the first time i saw these engravings they were concerning to me as well. it is always possible that someone else did it but they do look very similar to what we see directly from honda.

    I've seen that on all the heads that I have purchased from Honda as well (450x)I believe it's a Technician stamp from the motor builder.
