    Valve clearance

    by riosmark458 » Thu Mar 14, 2013 6:56 pm

    Hello riders.
If my intake valve clearance is at .016" (.4064mm) with no shim, what size shim would i use? I know i would need a .279mm shim but on the website it says shims start at 1.200mm.

Im confused, or am i missing something here?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

(moving the decimal, would i need a 2.790mm shim. Or one around that size?)

You can't calculate clearance without a shim. The shim sets on top of the valve stem, and all valve stems and seats don't have the same exact measurement. If you are removing the shim and putting the lifter on top of the retainer you have an unknown airspace between the valve stem and the lifter. You need to put a shim in to get a base line measurement and work math from there.
What was wrong with the shim you had in to begin with? Zero gap?
