    Intake valve deposits

    by LimitedSlip » Mon Jan 07, 2013 10:56 pm

Is it normal for the left intake valve to grow deposits while the right intake valve remains clean?

The reason I ask is that I did a top end job on my bike 55 hours ago. At that time the intakes were replaced with Ti OEM valves. I noted then that the left valve had deposits whereas the right valve was clean.

So I'm doing my winter maintenance and have the carb off and can look in and see deposits on the left valve and the right one is clean.

If this is common then I assume it is because the intake boot points more towards the right valve and it get's a more direct blast of mixture.

    Previous owner ran 92 E10 whereas I run 92 non-ethanol.

yes you are correct from the factory they are not perfect it seems the right hand go,s first due to the uneven air flow you can go a way to fixing this by porting (extrude is best ) and polishing

if you are talking about deposits on the back of the intake valve this is a sign the valve has tightened. what do your valve clearances look like?

The deposits are on the curved part of the valve. This is what you can see from the carb opening.

The intakes are both right at 0.005" clearance. When the valves were done the intakes were set to 0.006" and they settled to 0.005" by the time I checked them after about 10 hours.
