    '06 250R - time to shim or ???

    Hi Guys -

Bike started getting hard to start so figured it was time to adjust (or replace) the valves. This bike has been very good to me and is still running the original set and never been adjusted. (call it luck!)

So I opened it up tonight and measured everything - I was pleasantly surprised to see the below tolerances, so my question to the group is... are these out of spec enough to warrant shimming? Seems like they are pretty close, but I'm not sure at what point being out of spec will cause this thing to not start at all.

    Thoughts?

    Exhaust - spec .011
    right .013
    left .011

    Intake - spec .005
    Right .007
    Left .006

the right exhaust and right intake are out of spec. the others are in spec. when tight this can cause hard starting due to lack of compression. in your case they are fat so you shouldn't have any compression lost due to tight clearances. so, i would adjust to spec and run it. although you could run it as is.

the hard starting could be a sign you are losing compression through the rings. if this is a high hour motor i would replace the piston at a minimum. if not, you'll need to look to fuel(carb) as the starting issue.
