    Crankcase oil vs Trany oil

    by Roger » Fri Mar 14, 2008 12:03 pm

My dealer gave me GNA 10w40 motor oil and said to use it in both the crank and trany for my CRF 250R. Is this OK? Would I be better off with a transmission oil? I did not buy my bike there and thought they might be trying to mess my motor up. I hope that is not the case but thought I would ask here.

    It will work just fine.

It is my opinion that a specialty transmission fluid is more suited to the stress of a gearbox than a typical motor oil.

I use Maxima MTL 80W in my transmission. Many use the Honda 85W80 (red bottle) in theirs.

I did a search to find a thread that already existed. I just bought a 2006 CRF250R used.

I am an Amsoil guy at heart, but my riding buddy told me to put the Honda HP4 With Moly in the Engine and the Honda HP4 without Moly in the trans. I believe both are 10w40.

I want to run Amsoil 10w40 in the gearcase side. Do I run that also in the trans? Or Do I need the HP4 without moly? What is recommended that I can buy at the Honda dealer.

And all I need is an oil filter and the fluids right? Nothing else special?

    Thanks!

Maxima MTL is probably the best oil out there for the Trans. You definitely can feel a difference when the bike shifts. It shifts alot smoother.

Alright.. I will try it. So the consensus says 80W?

Think I can get this at a big motorcycle shop here in town? or special order only?

You can run the Amsoil Motorcycle 10W-40 in both engine and tranny if you want to go that route. These guys will have you doing shots of that Maxima MTL soon if you let them... ;)

Kidding aside, Maxima is great stuff but you can't go wrong with Amsoil either. Your choice...

So I was thinking about quantity of fluids. My friend who rides the 450X says to put 1 full quart in the tranny and measure properly for the engine side. So how much do you guys run? Are you all to manual spec or is there a special secret amount?

And it is ok to run Amsoil 10w40 on both sides without any issues?

Not sure about running a full quart in the 250R. :-k Can't comment. I usually run about 750-800ml in both sides of my 450R. The 450X absolutely run a full quart in the trans...
As long as its the motorcycle version of the Amsoil 10W-40; yes, both sides ok.

The full quart is a bit much for the 250's, most guys are running about 800cc's
