    Suspension/Sag adjustments

    by befree » Tue Mar 11, 2008 6:49 pm

Ok, I need an idiot's guide for suspension. I've been reading about it here but still am not sure if what I've done will make it better or worse.

I finally got around to checking my sag and confirmed what I already knew by the ride that the spring is too stiff for my weight. I had only 3 inches of race sag; after adjusting to almost the top of the nut, got 3.5 inches. Then a check of the free sag: about an inch and a quarter. Too much according to my book.

I've also raised the forks in the clamps 1/2 inch to lower the ride height some more (it already has a lowering link).

Since a lighter spring is not in my budget right now, when I take it out again, am I gonna like it better or break my neck? Other setting suggestions?

    Barb -

Send your suspension to Derek Steahly @ NV2 Suspension! (www.nv2suspension.com)

There's no good way to get you in range without new springs. Clickers just don't give you enough range.

Derek did our riding clinic last year at Adventure Week. He'll be there this year -- may be a great time to have him respring. He'll have his equipment up at camp and will give all interested a free assessment. He'll also work suspension up (re-spring/re-valve/new fluids) at camp so you'll have it to ride and test out.

    Good luck!

    Brad

Sounds like you already know what you need, but it gives the basics...

Thanks, all. Hey - that is great info in that guide, I will study it carefully. I know there is an important relationship between front and rear settings, but putting it to pratical use is new territory.

I'll save up for a lighter spring. Anyone need a stock spring? :)

Brad - I'm aiming to be there early enough in the week this time to talk with Derek. I sooo want to do the skills class!!

Would Derek be interested in giving a Suspension class?
(paid for if need be) I would love to learn the finer aspects of revalving, hands on.
