    fitting 250X starter motor to a 250R

    by covmotorsport » Thu Dec 06, 2007 12:21 pm

Hey guys, I'm a bit new to this forum.
I'm from Cov University doing motorsport engineering.
Basically we're entering a car into formula student this year and planning on running a Honda CRF 250 R in the back of it.
There's various reasons why we're running this engine and why we kind of have to stick to using it.
The rules stipulate though that the car has to start under its own power i.e. with a starter motor.
Unfortunately getting hold of good CRFX engines as far as I've discovered is neigh impossible in the UK! Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places.
But anyway so we're going to have to fit a starter motor to a CRF 250 R '04 engine we have. I haven't seen the 250X engine in person before so know little about it apart from it has a starter motor.
SO the main question is, is it possible to take the starter motor from the X and fit it to the R. I know there's a bit of worked involved if it is possible and that doesn't really worry us.
    Any help would be great.
    Cheers

No way to do it without machining new cases from billet.

You'd be way ahead of the game to just start with an X engine.

You can pick them up from dismantlers or EBay for about $ 2000 in nice shape.

All the R parts and X parts are interchangeable EXCEPT the case and starter.

    Cheers for the fast reply!
I was expecting that to be the case, and we are possibly prepared to maybe do that, we fortunately have the software, tools and machines to do that.
I typed in dismantlers and came up with far more results than breakers! So just trawling through some now!
Unfortunately due to finances and tracing transactions and legitimacy we're not allowed to by anything off of Ebay, which doesn't help matters.
Thanks for the help again, much appreciated.
It's quite an interesting project we're going to run it on Bio-ethanol E85.

Do you think you could fit a starter motor up to the kick starter gear?
