Just got a brand new 06

    by Zhack » Wed Nov 14, 2007 9:41 am

I just bought a brand new 06 250r. My first bike was an 04 250x and I loved cutting teeth on it.

Since then I got into woods racing and have wanted lighter, faster bikes. I experimented with 2 stroke (KTM 250XC) that are the flavour of chioce amongst the local pros but keep coming back to my 250X and loving it.

So..... the natural progression was to the lighter 250R.

BUT.....I want to set this up as a killer woods racer.

I believe in suspension over power first so I'll spend pipe money on a respring and revalve.

So..... what's next? Armour (skid, hand guards, rad guards) is a given. Suggestions?

I'll prolly go scott's for steering stab.

Is it wise to "gear down" for woods (52 teeth on rear?)....I'm not about top speed, just smooth and consitent.

How about jetting? I hear the CRF's are BRUTAL for jetting/bogging etc? I can attest that my 04250X was a nightmare until JD saved the day. I have been advised that White Bros os the hot ticket for the 06CRF250R because of the card intake reducer....comments?

Finally.....what about a rekluse clutch? cool? "wimpy"? I'd only consider it with a manual override....I don't like to let my revs fall on a hill climb.

I'm sure I'm missing a whole bunch of great ideas/mods...HELP PLEASE!

No. Ride where you race first, then decide.

You'll never regret it and never be without one in the future.
    Finally.....what about a rekluse clutch?

You'll never regret it or be without one in the future, and ESPECIALLY for woods work/racing it's killer. Nathan Woods has raced a KXF250 with a Rekluse and loved it. Get the "Pro", then the clutch works at all rpm if you need it. You'll be shocked how little you use it, but it's a good safety blanket.
With a Scotts and a Rekluse you'll be very surprised at how much your workload decreases. Without a Rekluse you'll be very surprised how much you stall it in tight conditions. With the Rekluse you won't be stalling.

e-mail JD. He's supposed to have the 06-07 250R's down cold now. I recommended him to a couple owners and they're al smiles and bogless.
Congratulations on the new bike, let us know how it goes and what you wind up doing.
If you don't try the Rekluse, the first race you're exhausted, and stall the 250R and have to kick it think of the Rekluse  Doug

    A clarification on the gearing...
If you ride in woods racing you're going to have to use first gear if it's at all tight, not optional.
If you try to get first lower on a motocrosser so that you can use it like an X you'll fail, because to do it you'll wind up with a jerking, abrupt pain in the butt with a 40mph top speed.
The Rekluse allows you to use first without fear of stalling, it works great and you won't screw up your other ratios. The Rekluse is a real treat in the woods, and a magic transformation for bikes with motocross gear ratios used in Hare Scrambles/woods. Doug

    Thanks for the GREAT feedback.

Are you saying that gearing the bike down (52 teeth on rear) to help 1st gear will have a negative impact on the others?

It's clear that you favor the rekluse z-pro (i can definitely see myslef going in this direction) and if I do so it seems you are saying that adding a tooth is pointless or even a bad thing?

    Am I reading you?

BTW, I RARELY us 1st on my 250X. 2nd and 3rd are all I ride....I even start out in 2st gear and attack gnarly steeps in 2nd or 3rd. I'm thinking I might even like a taller 1st.....That said I did own a stock 450R and struggled with stalling (and hot starting!).

    Thanks again.....GREAT reply :D

    Yes, you've got it.
If I were setting up a 250R for woods racing/hauling I'd install the Rekluse and go hit my favorite place to ride, then make a decision. I'll bet you either keep the gearing stock,or maybe add one tooth in the rear at most.
You bet, changing sprockets does affect all the gears, and I'm sure as heck not saying that's a bad thing. I'm just saying it would be a bad thing to go crazy-like 3 teeth rear or one up front- on a 250 or a 450R being used for off-road.
Oh, the stock 250R chain isn't so good. To aviod spacer hassles, I'd replace it with the excellent DID VT like you had on your 250X.
I really think the 250R, set-up right, is a real blast to ride off-road and I can see one in my future. Doug

For what its worth, Honda USA is blowing out '06's that were overproduced. A dealer in Oregon (Hillsboro Motorsport) picked up 100(!) '06's and is letting 'em go for $3999 +PDI and Freight.

    I bought 3 :D

Do you know anything about the white bros jet kit vs the JD? The dealer parts guys sell both but said that the WB is the magic because of the reducer sleeve that fits in the carb intake. I bought 3, but had a hard time turning my back on the JD kit b/c of how much it helped my X.

I don't know about the WB kit, but I just can't get away from JD's on-line help, plus the two guys I know who've put the JD kit in their 250R's are very happy, let alone my personal positive experiences.
That's why I'd e-mail JD and ask him why buy his kit over the WB, which for all I know may be just excellent. I've ridden the 250R's with theJD kit and there sure isn't any bog anywhere.
Those 06's now are pretty much coast to coast 3999, that's one heck of a buy.
Zhack, you'd fit right in in Ohio bud, motocrossers zipping through the woods ! :D Doug
