Upgrades - Which Parts? - Opinions

    by AUKwrestle250 » Wed Sep 05, 2007 7:59 pm

Hey everyone! I have been the proud owner of a 2007 CRF250R for the last couple of months and I love it! I was going to do some basic things to upgrade its performance and make it run a bit better. What kinds of things would you all suggest? Here's what I am definitely thinking about:

    1. JD Jetting Kit - heard many good things about this product.
    2. Twin Air Powerflow kit.

Is there anything else worth looking at? Boyesen water pump? R&D Powerbowl? High Comp. Piston...??? I'd just love to hear what kind of parts you guys are running on your bikes..

    Thanks!!

The first two things you mention are a good start. What type of riding do you do? Is it all track or a mix?

All track with my 250. I have a CRF230F that I muck around on in my backyard but the 250 is exclusively ridden at the local MX track. Thanks!

    Skid plate
    radiator braces
dial in suspension for your riding ability
If your not in the "d" or "c" class, exhaust syatem.
Twin Air air filter cage and ring, couple extra filters

As mentioned get rad braces at least, get your suspension dialed in for your weight and style. Getting the suspension dialed will make you go faster for sure. What rubber do you have on?

Thanks redrider. I was already thinking about getting the Works Connection Skid Plate, Engine Guards, and Radiator Braces. I know that aluminum isn't quite as light as carbon fiber, but I'd rather protect the bike with metal. I do a lot of road biking in the spring, summer, and fall (I plan to race next year) and I have seen some beautiful carbon fiber bikes ($10,000 +) get destroyed in crashes. Thanks for our reply though. I am trying to make good use of the money that I have. Any suggestions for exhaust? I'd like to keep the duels seeing as I am not super fanatical about milking every bit of power out of my bike. I've heard good things about Akrapovic, White Brothers, and FMF.Carbon vs. Aluminum vs. Ti as far as material? Sound of the pipe (loudness) doesn't matter. Anything else I should consider? Thanks!!

Jaws - I completely forgot about tires! Thanks for bringing them up. The local MX track that I ride at has three different tracks (they're in the process of building two more). One is a full blown MX track that is meant for racing and really experienced riders. The ruts on that thing are big enough to swallow a whole bike! :) Anyway, the dirt on that track is a lot looser and fine then the other track. It's darker, and the traction is significantly better than the other track (lighter dirt, VERY hard packed in places, some sand, a good amount of flat corners) is very difficult to stay upright on. It would be awesome if you could give me some advice on the best kind of tire (front/rear) for track riding. Dunlop, Maxxis, Bridgestone... any suggestions? Thanks!

Personally, I would not mess with the exhaust until you mangle the stock item. Use that money for other items until then.

The Dunlop 756 is a good all around tire for MX. You can step up a bit to the 756RR if you want to spend more money, but I don't know if you could tell the difference. The RR (Race Replica) is for the top guys, which you might be since I don't really know you! :)
The 756 is a soft to intermediate compound.

Thanks for the response Jaws. I certainly wouldn't classify myself as one of the "top" guys as of yet (maybe someday I'll be as fast as I'd like) but I appreciate your input. I will make sure to look into getting some better tires for my bike as traction seems to be an impossible issue every time I ride hard-packed dirt. Thanks again.

My son has been using Kenda's lately (Washougal and Millviille) and have been very happy with these tires,
Cheaper and free shipping (over 150$) at Motosports outlet. Use the Dunlop 739 for blue groove.
756's are good tires, but only last us 2-3 motos.
Usually get 10+ motos from Kendas before they become practice tires.
Oh yeah, I usually get my practice tires from Pros (they throw 'em out after 2 motos) or tire vendors.
(Yes, I do change tires 2-3 times per week).

Yeah, that 739 is a great blue-groove tire. I use the 739 Desert AT for the rocks and desert. Take it into the loamy stuff and it sucks. I swear you can run it flat without issue, it is so stiff.

as an owner of a 250r i would also recommend the boyesen quickshot 2 pump cover. its easy to put on too just bolt it on and it reduces hot engine stalling, better throttle response, and more low end power and at under a $100 its a good buy too.

    just my 2 cents
