250R Compression??

Hi Guys,
I'm new to the forum, and I just bought an 04 CRF250R from a local dealer.
The bike seems to run well, and I even had a semi-pro rider take it for a few laps on the track, and he said it runs great!
What I'm concerned about is, I just rode my buddy's 06 CRF250R, and his seems to have so much more compression. The power on both bikes seems the same, his may have a little more low-end, but his is so much harder to kick over! Is it time to get the top-end looked at on my bike? I have read a lot of info on checking the valves... does this need to be done?? This is my first 4-stroke, so I'm a little new on valves, etc.
