    crf250r clutch trouble

    by bs2usa » Fri Aug 10, 2007 3:30 pm

i have an '04 crf250r with clutch problems. the clutch does not like to crab gradually as it should. It seems like it grabs on or off, not much in between which makes it very difficult to get going. you can't notice it much once you're moving. I put new plates in it which made little difference. The clutch basket has a little slop. Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated!!!

    What fluid are you running?

Have you tried one specifically for transmissions?

Honda HP (red bottle) or Maxima MTL 85w?

I always used the "red bottle" on all my bikes with the best results UNTIL my 06 crf250.
I was instructed to try the "gold bottle", NON MOLY on the trans side. It significantly improved the same issue I had as bs2usa. I know, I doubted it to, and am surprised it worked. It's with trying once. Also, any grooves in the clutch basket will give you the on/off feeling. It used to bother me big time when I was on the start gate.

Sounds like the basket and/or the hub is grooved. Exact symptoms.

    clutch trouble

The problem is in the clutch basket, it is grooved. Is there any reason (at least temporarily) why I couldn't remove the basket and clean up the grooves. It will make the spans on the basket a little bit wider, but this shouldn't hurt the clutch in any way, correct???

You can get by for a little by taking the grooves out with a file. It will groove again soon. I'd start saving for a aftermarket basket.

    250r clutch

I pulled the basket out and files the grooves. The clutch is back to normal! These motors/bikes are very easy to work on once you get the hang of things. Thanks for the help!!!
