Your float may be stuck/set too high inside your carb.

+1. You either need a new main needle and seat or you got some junk in there stopping it from closing all the way.

My son's bike did that also. I took the carb apart 15 times and cleaned stuff. What finally worked was adjusting the float. Remember small changes make big results.

i talked to a mechanic and he said the best thing to do is to tap the bottom or side of the Carburetor VERY LIGHTLY if something is stuck in there. he said to give it a couple love pats so that i dont break it and have to do a whole Carb Rebuild. what do you guys think of it?
    Good? Bad? depends?

It could fix it, or make the dirt go somewhere else and cause another problem. Thats something you would do if your stuck in the middle of the woods. If you haven't had the carb apart for awhile, now would be a good time to clean/inspect it.

The same exact thing happened to my bike when I took it to the local MX track yesterday. It wouldn't start worth a crap and I had to roll it up a hill and pop the clutch to get the motor to turn over. I'm going to take it to a shop and get the thing re-jetted. I posted the same question on thumpertalk.com and recieved the same response. My other question is this:

Is it bad to run the bike if the float is too high/low? Could it damage any other part of the carb. or engine?

Thanks for any and all replies...

Auk. The problem you are having is a good sign of your valves being out of adjustment. When the valves go out of spec it gets harder to start to the point you have to roll it down a hill and bump start it. Check your valves before taking it to the dealership.

As far as cleaning/adjusting carb, as well as valves.....Taking your bike to a dealer, or any mechanic for simple and general maintenance every time will cost too much, and will make you go broke before you know it!

Redrider... thanks for your reply. I am slowly learning how to get around the 250 as pertains to general maintenance. Although the bike is only a few weeks old, it has been ridden very frequently. I will check the valves tomorrow. Thanks again.

    Simple First

    by fbr » Wed Aug 08, 2007 10:49 pm

Ok, simple things first. Very common for a piece of cellulose (ie. a weed) to pass through the fuel valve screen and lay itself over the needle valve seat. If this has occurred it may not wash away and you might have to get in there and physically remove it. The float level probably didn't bend itself out of adjustment so I would save float level adjustment for last. If still leaking and no visible grass, with the bowl off manually open and close the needle valve (with the fuel on). The brass valve seat insert may have an o-ring that is leaking around the valve seat. Examine the needle for nicks or groove. Replace as necessary.
