    Oil into airbox.. then carb...

    by KevinM » Sun Jun 10, 2007 8:03 pm

I crashed today the ended up with the bike down and still running with the throttle pinned. Another bike got between me and my bike which delayed me getting the bike upright and back to idle. When it was down.. the bike was a little inverted.

anyway.. I get it up, it stalls.. I start kicking and notice oil burning smell and smoke coming out of the left pipe... (two pipe '07 250R). Then I see the oil all over the frame and swinger.

I push it back to the trailer to find that the oil ran into a breather line which dumps off into the carb side of the air filter box. The airbox and carb were soaked with oil.. I opened the 17mm float bowl bolt to see oil/gas mix come out of the bottom of the carb.... so I let that drain till it was clear. I cleaned out the air box and what I could get to of the carb intake (without removing the carb... I was at the track and didn't want to mess with it too much... dust dirt.. etc).

So.... since smoke was coming out of the pipe when I was kicking it.. I assume excess oil ran through the cylinder and over valves... I may have kicked it 6 or 7 times.. it didn't start of course.

The question is... does anyone have any idea if this could screw up my valves? I plan to take it to a shop I trust, but I'm looking for some of your thoughts on it.

Next mod I do will be the breather by-pass.. which I already did on my 250X... damn!!!!

    and thanks

No Kevin, you'll be fine. Change the oil and make sure the fluid levels are good. Then you'll be ready to rock...

Thanks 124...I'll clean out the carb to be sure. I was just worried about the valves getting gunked up and sticking.

hey.. I think that race you guys were doing was this past weekend. How'd it go? Any pics?

No race. We threw a bachelor party for a friend. We ended up going riding at a practice track that allows quadtards. We had a few in the group... Went off without a hitch. Except for the bachelor was sent to the hospital 10 minutes after getting there. 4 laps to a track he'd never been to and tried the biggest jump at the place. All sand track, 80ft uphill triple, on a 125. You know the rest! Came up way short. No biggie, his fiancee was a little upset though after seeing 4 stitches just below his lower lip. haha...

That sounds like a cool idea. 125 on a step up triple.. ouch! Well.. at least he was ready to get hitched after getting stiched....

tell him to get a 450 next time he tries that!

hehe.. I doubt it. But I'd bet there might have been some needed after the attempt at the triple.

No way. We're a sensible group, although some may consider us a little off our rockers on some of the stuff we try or build to try. There's only like a 1/2 dozen of us that ever do that triple, and with the party later that night (and soon I'm standing up in his wedding), I wasn't even doing it. Still not sure what was running through his head to try it.

For the most part, we're all married with kids, but grew up doing this stuff. Some of the guys have mad skills, unfortunately for the bachelor this past weekend, he ain't one of em!!! LOL. ;)

He still takes the stance that "He almost made it..."
    I keep saying "yeah...right."

Man, in the world of off-road biking, "almost made it" normally equals pain!

Hope he learned that valuable lesson since it didn't hurt him too badly.

Regarding that 2 stroke conversion I've been working on... ... yeah.. it's coming along great... After I pretty much disassembled the bike and cleaned up as much as I could... I fired it up and man did it smoke!!!

In order to clean it up, I had the carb off, cleaned that out pretty well. I looked into the head and saw oil pooled on the intake valves. Rather than just let it fall into the cylinder, I used some clean shop towels and carefully soaked up most of it.

After it ran for a bit, I saw some oil emerging from between the header and the Y-pipe. I shut it down, cleaned up the oil that dripped and took a look inside the header, but it was dry as a bone. After getting it back together again, it kicked right over and ran fine. No smoke.

I ordered the Applied Racing vent kit. I read that Honda had redesigned the crankcase venting for 2007 (my year) in an attempt to develop more power. I'm wondering what they could have done and if diverting the vent from the airbox to the outside with the Applied vent kit will have any effect on what Honda was trying to do with the power.

124, do you have any thoughts on that. thnx
