how to - unstake a clutch lock nut

    by gal8x » Thu Sep 05, 2013 12:44 pm

So I searched the web to see how people are unstaking clutch basket nock nuts. Most simply force them off with an air impact or a cheater pipe. There are a few tales of woe associated with that procedure.
I want to reuse the nut and I simply can’t risk damaging the threads.
Having busted several tools trying to unstake the final drive nut I needed something new.
My solution worked so well I simply had to share it.
I took a standard bit from my impact driver (don’t think I have ever used one. Ever) and ground it to fit the slot and under the stake. Thinking it needed to be hardened I put it to a cutting torch and dunked it in oil. (Don’t believe I needed to do that).
I hammered it home. Then back to the grinder to trim the tip down making the tool thicker. Then I finished of the stake.Image

Simple things are often the best.
You are probably right to not harden it so there is less chance of damaging the grove.
