Sorry guys, this is my third post in like a week in this section. Anyways, one of the screws on my master cylinder is total screwed. I had tightened it wayyyy to much last winter, and kind of stripped the head in the process. Today I bleed the back brake, and went to do the same with the front. I could not get the screw out with a regular screw driver, and I didn't want to strip it by trying too hard. I grabbed the drill and was trying to get it out with that, but that was a bad move. The tip of the screw driver bit in the drill broke off, and part of it flew on the ground and the other piece is still broken in the screw. How am I supposed to get it out? I really, REALLY don't want to buy a new master cylinder because of this. PLEASE HELP!!!!

Got a Dremel? Try using a cutoff to cut a slot in the screw. Use a new slotted screwdriver.

or

A screw-extractor.

or

If the cap gets messed up and you have to buy a new one anyway, you can grind the head of the screw off and twist the remaining threads out of the master cylinder with pliers/vise-grips.

Suggestions not in any particular order...

Thanks 124. Yeah, I have a dremel, and that would probably work. However, whats a screw remover? I'll probably buy a WC red cylinder cover anyway, so your third suggestion might work.

Nothing, I'm waiting 'till my dad gets back from South Africa to see what he says. I liked 124's idea to grind the top of the screw off with the dremel, and I think that will work. I just wanted to know if anyone else had any clever ideas.

Thanks again 124. I got the dremel today and used a cut off to cut a slot in the screw, just like you said. I did cut into the cap a little bit, but nothing big. I was able to pull off the cap and bleed the brake, which is great. But since it looks like crap now, is it possible to get some 6mm or 7mm bolts (like the ones used on the rear master cylinder) to replace the stupid screws? I would really prefer to use bolts on everything...

oh i did the same thing with my front fender bolts, i ended up drilling it out and tapping a bigger thread into the triples but drilling through a drill bit aahhhhhhhhh

I wouldn't do the bolt thing...but I'm kind of a stickler for things like that. I would suggest buying another cap and using the OE setup (or aftermarket cap for some blingage..). Glad you got it off without too much trouble.
