    shock linkage bearing replacement/rebuild

    by nnudy34 » Sun Sep 25, 2011 1:11 pm

I cant seem to find a video on this or a thread... I bought the Pivot Works shock linkage bearing rebuild kit and I did the dog bone but can not get the bearings out of the linkage arm. They are the same as the ones in the dog bone but the inside is not a straight shot through to push them out. I tried going through with a screw driving and driving it out but cant get enough of a lip to catch on. Any suggestions or tips?

thank but that is the part I have completed. The other part is the (dont know what it is technically called) link that has the same bearings. The hole they go into is not the same diameter all the way through, it tapers in and the bearing stops against it. So for installing it helps but I cant seem to press it out since it rests against the inside and is flush.

if you are talking about the shock link, then these bearings can only be removed with a blind bearing removal tool such as this tool:

this type of tool is required because of the shoulders machined inside the shock link bearing bores.

    shock link bearing removal crf

    by pedro » Sun Oct 16, 2011 9:02 pm

    Hi
I have just run into the same problem as nnudy34.
Unfortunately I don't have a spare US$250 to buy the blind bearing removal tool as suggested. Has anyone else got any alternatives? Poor engineering on Honda's part that its such a sod to remove these bearings.
    thanks, Peter

I have never had a problem punching them out. You can find a set of punches at harborfreight with the flat end, set it over a vice and gently hammer them out one side then the other and they`ll pop right out. http://www.harborfreight.com/hand-tools ... 93424.html

I think madmax is mistaken. Yes you can punch out the bearings in the linkage unit that has teh 3 joints. However you cant do this with the shock linkage arm bearings (2 joints) due to the step. They have to be removed by extraction outwards. The only practical solution I read that someone had done was to cut the bearing shell with a high speed dremmel(not right thru but just enough to weaken it so it can be levered out). However, I ended up getting my local Honda dealer to remove them but the mechanic wouldnt tell me how he did it!! Trade secret he reckons. Still he didnt charge me and it only took him 10 minutes so thats what I will do in the future after having admitted defeat. Peter CRF250X

Pedro, he punched them out like i did. On the "dog bone" part you catch the lip of the race with the punch by going thru the hole from the top and knocking it out thru the bottom. Start at the top of the race if it breaks you can still use the bottom lip. I`ve done both my 250s and my 450 just takes a few minutes of pecking and out they come.

With all the other bearings i used a threaded rod, two sockets, and washers and nuts, and pushed them out. Next time i do it i`ll put up a vid.
