    Fork seals vs Re-build

    by rocketman » Thu May 20, 2010 1:41 pm

I have an 04 250x, I dont do big jumps, mainly single track and rocky stuff, I have one seal leaking slightly so I fugured time to replace seals. I was looking at the catalog and I see pivot works makes a seal kit or a rebuild kit. I have never rebuit the forks, only resprung and changed the oil. I am looking for some opinions (Scary I know) on what to do.

    Seals only?
    Rebuild forks?
    OEM or Pivot Works parts?

    Thx Dan

I prefer the OEM seals to the Pivotworks...that being said, the Pivotworks kit has everything for one low price, oil seals, dust seals, o-rings, bushings, etc.

If the bike hasn't seen a hard life, most likely all the other stuff is good, but you never know until you do a visual inspection.

Buying the Pivotworks kit gives you insurance in case you open it up and find everything needs replacing.

If you're going to take the forks apart to change the dust seals, you really should change the oil seals also. Once you've gotten that far, changing the oil seals will take another 13 minutes, so just do it.

Its cheap preventative maintenance. I only use OEM bushings and seals in my bikes.

It would really suck to do all the work to replace the dust seals, and then have the oil bushings blow out a month later.

Thanks, Yeah we rebuilt both our bikes at the same time, not as bad as it sounded, Pivotworks has a great video on thier web site on how to re-build your forks. I used pivot works on both, they have a very nice kit with everything you need in one package. It does make a mess though, I planned all my work, drain pans and all, I still made a mess! All is good now.
