Just did this job last week. I used 2 long sharp scribers (or anything strong, long and pointy). Because the clip spins in the groove, you use one tool on one end of the clip and dig under the other end with the other tool. The clip twists slightly and you can hook underneath it. Bitch of a job.

I then pressed out the bearing with a small socket that fit the bearing face on one side and a large on the other side (make sure you are going the right way - in and out on the clip side) covering the face of the shock head. I put a long threaded bolt through and just wound it up and Presto! It's not very tight so not much effort is required.

    Good luck.

I did this job last night, EXACTLY how you explained even down to the threaded
Bolt down the eyes of the sockets? I'm not a monkey when it comes
To spanners but this clip just wouldn't ping out? Nightmare?

I'm greasing all my linkage but orange or smith can you tell me if I
Replace this bearing will it make a lot of difference or will
This top bearing have very slight play even from new?

The clip needs to be out before you attempt to move the bearing.

It's just technique - you'll get it. It does take me a good 10 minutes each time as time has passed since the last time I did it and I always forget!

I saw you cross threaded this post and Agent's response mentioning dental picks. They look like the perfect tool for the job (I just ordered some off ebay!). Maybe give them a hit.

I'm on my second top bearing in about 60 hours - I can tell when it's time as when you lift the rear of the bike up by the rear guard you get a clicking sound and feeling. That's the sign. I don't notice any play when it's new.

Yeah I had the topping out sound for a whilst but just didn't have the time to getting round to
Doing it till today, repacked everything, had two bearings seized.
It always happens when there's too much static grease water gets in and sits.
So I always use a lot of oil in the bearing and grease on the seals to keep it out?

But the culprit for my slop is in the linkage where the shock connects!
Loads of grease and loaded with rust,

Might see it I can get this bearing on its own?
