04 CRF450 Problems Separating Inner and Outer Fork Tube

    by jeffal621 » Mon Mar 08, 2010 2:46 pm

I am putting new fork seals on my 04 crf450. I already completed one fork, but on the second one I cant separate the inner and outer fork tube. I have tried everything. Anyone ever run into the same problem or have any tips/tricks to separating them? Please help. thanks

Thanks, I just checked it out. But the slide hammer technique isnt working. The fork gets stuck really easily when its pulled out and has to be forced back in to compress. Its feels like the bushing or washer may be catching on something. Im out of ideas.

Yup. The large bushing is getting hung up on the smaller one.

    2 Things.

    1) You WILL need to put new bushings in now. The teflon will be ruined when you finally get them apart.

    2) Use a propane torch to gently heat the area containing the seal/bushings from the outside of the tube. Be careful with fire. Once warmed up, they will separate.

The torch worked!! Fork seals, bushings, and o-rings are all new and done. And did it all without special tools. Thanks!
