Sag on 450X set, front still seems too stiff

    by 5 speed » Thu Feb 12, 2009 8:33 pm

So I posted previously and got a little confused on the changes I was making but I now have my rear sag set at 3.875 in or 98.4mm and free sag is 1.1 or 27.94mm. I re set all the clickers to the recommendations here and will try it out this weekend. I think though its back to the same situation in that the front seems too stiff/harsh. Someone mentioned adding oil to the front end but i dont see how that would improve this; it seems more oil would slow the action even further.

I want the first 4 inches to be very active the mid 4 less so and the remainder progressive to handle the larger hits. Now that I figured out with everyones help that the spring was the right rate and it was overtightened it explains why it kicked so bad in the whoops. It did however make the front end work better because it was sitting higher in the rear, but the front is still dismal. I am more than happy to continue to work on the front myself before caving in and taking it somewhere. All I can say is my White Power suspension on my KTM was superior to every other bike I have ever owned and after that, this one is unacceptable at this point.

    Kinda makes you wonder huh???

Everybody knows that the WP is horrible and is the worst suspension made. Most KTM owner's will even acknowledge that...

Yea and every test written acknowledges that these X Showa forks stink from the factory, didnt Honda just go to KYB? Anyhow, the White power units on my 04 were fabulous, like it, dont like it, that is the way it is, as was the fit and finish of the whole unit. My clapped out Y2K CR250 worked ten times better than these units. I have had plenty of Hondas, dont get me wrong, but these are the worst.

By the way, I dont pee orange or red, and unless somebody is paying to ride their stuff or giving it away, i just tell it like it is.

How are you so accurate with those measurements?
Anyone this precise will never be happy.

not true. You know when you have a good working suspension? When you dont ever think about it.

yea whatever. I was looking for some help so if you have something of value to add, please do so.

So, essentially I set all the clickers to some recommendations made here which are pretty close to stock. I zip tied the shock shaft in the back and a fork slider. Over whoops, which is pretty much standard here in FL, it is using all the rear shock travel and the fronts are everthing but the last 2-3 inches of the slider. If the suspension was set completely right I should be able to skip along the tops and the bike should maintain a horizontal plane to the ground with the suspension absorbing the bumps. Its pretty choppy, up and down, the rear is not kicking sideways any longer, I am thinking maybe the choppiness is caused now by the suspension being too soft? Maybe the rebound needs to be tightened?

    Suggestions?

How fast are you hitting these whoops?

Speed depends on how close the trees are and how far apart the whoops are but its 35 to 45 MPH.

Well finally, I am taking my bike to Pro Action in Florida to get my suspension set up with new springs and a revalve. I pretty much blew my back out last ride outriding the suspension in the whoops just to see how fast it could be ridden but it was bottoming the whole time so it was lets say a violent ride. I hope everyone is right that the suspension is good if set up properly because I decided to keep this bike for awhile.

maybe it's time for a new technique not a new suspension?

No, it made quite a difference having the suspension fixed. The front is plush and it definitely took the edge off the whoops. The rear is better but not as good as the front.

Keep working with it until it's where you want it. The Showas are infinitely adjustable, it's just a matter of trial and error sometimes.

Is Pro Action working with you??? Keep making adjustments until you are happy?
