    Help with suspension 450x

    by djh65 » Thu May 03, 2007 10:10 pm

Hello to all. As you probably have noticed I did lots of work to the carb of my bike making it scream but I am having troubles figuring out what to do with the suspension. From all the reading I have done I know I need to fix it but would like some help with the numbers. Click this and click that. So here's the deal I am 250 with gear and would like some suggestions to get me on the right track. I was reading in the Honda book and it said the 450x is set for someone in the 160 range so it must be wrong for me.
    Help. :)
P.S. I put the scott steering damper on tonight and would like a suggestion on where to start with that.

On the suspension, before you can properly set the sag, you must have the correct springs installed for your weight. This will allow the suspension to operate in the correct range. Making adjustments on the clickers won't help in this regard.

On the Scotts damper, I run mine at about 8-9 clicks out from full hard. In sand washes, I will tighten it up a click or two depending on conditions.

Agent is right on there. Your weight demands that you get stiffer springs for a minimum. Having it revalved for your riding style at the same time will give you the best ride possible. Simply changing the springs can make the ride harsher. The valving can make the ride more plush and still soak up the hits.

The most important thing is to set the sag, which cannot be done in your case without changing the springs.

It's more money, but it is the best performance money you can spend.

Suspension can run anywhere from $400 to $1000 depending on who does the work. Look around your local area for a well-liked tuner and see if they can help you out at a reasonable cost. You can go with any of the main stream tuners RG3, White Brothers, Race Tech, etc.

I run my Scotts at the same place Agent does. Works well for me.

Changing the springs can be done, but valving is more of an art than a science. It's best left to the pro's.
