New Triple Clamps for '02 CRF 450

    by R3dr1d3r » Sun Apr 15, 2007 12:37 pm

Looking to upgrade/change triple clamps on my bike from stock to help with turning and overall handling. Seems there are a lot of different offsets, brands etc. out there. I mostly run trails/hills and recently, some hare scramble events. (man do I need to get into better shape! HA! ) Anyway, looking for some advice on what to get.. 8)

I'm working little by little to turn my 250X into a track bike, and just changed to the Applied triple clamp kit (22mm offset) along with changing to the Dunlop 739 front tire. I have to say there is a world of difference in the way the front end handles now. Before, it would want to push straight in turns, and was pretty horrible around any flat turn (unless I was in a field of grass!).

Night and day difference. Now I did both at the same time, so I'm not sure just how much credit the tire or the triple clamps deserve apart from one another. But the combination of both has made a huge improvement. I wouldn't hesitate to suggest them both to anyone with similar troubles. Ken mentioned that some guys choose the 20mm offset for even greater control, so if you're not in the market for a new front tire just yet, you could try the 20mm offsets first and see how that goes for you. The closer you bring the forks to the frame (offset) the tighter you can steer. Bringing the rear tire in will help that some as well (as in shortening your chain a link).

Note: you may want to chose the option to have a steering stem/bearing pre-pressed in your order. I think Ken offers that. I had to take my stock lower-clamp to a local machine shop, who said it was a bit of a chore pressing the stem out of the old clamps. I think a new stem with your order runs about 50$. It cost me 36$ in labor fees to have the stock stem and bearing pressed off/on - just a heads up for you. A new stem might be an investment well worth its cost.
