    Leaky forks

    by redrider666 » Wed Mar 28, 2007 5:28 pm

I have very little experience with forks and fork seals. There seems to be some oil dripping down the lower part of my fork leg during rides, I am assuming this is fork oil and my seals are damaged. Question - Is there an easy way to change seals or is it possible something just got stuck up under the dust cover? Thought you guys might have some suggestions before I start pulling everything apart. Thanks.

Pry the dust seal off and run either a small bit of film negative or a .005 feeler guage around the inside of the fork seal. Hold it at an angle so that any debris is pushed down and out of the seal. I have done that twice to my leaking seals and it has fixed the issue.

This is a common problem with OEM and OEM copies.
When dirt gets caught in between the seal lips it causes what we call a "bridge". This simply allows dirt, water and oil to pass by....not good!

The feeler gauge works fine, but you will keep having to do it over and over again. There are other alternatives that permanently fix this design flaw for fork seals...look around!
