Race Tech v.s. Honda ideal weight for stock springs

    by whoya » Sun Dec 31, 2006 9:46 pm

Now I'm starting to get confused...Race tech's website states that the ideal rider weight for the rear spring is 200 lbs. ( 5.5 kg ) I weigh 185 they suggest a 5.4 kg witch is a lighter spring. no problem here.
For the front end the stock spring rate is .450 kg, Using there calculater and punching in different rider weights, you need to punch in 165 lbs to get .449 kg so I take this as the ideal rider weight for stock fork springs. if you punch in 200 lbs it will say you need .470 kg springs
At 185 lbs I need to go stiffer on the front .450 to .461
and lighter on the rear 5.5 to 5.4
What do you guys think about the ideal weights? 165lbs for the front and 200 lbs for the rear? Am I reading somthing wrong?

AS , from the owners manual I get this, Page 109 under fork springs.
The fork springs in CRF's are about right for riders weighing between 150 - 160 lbs. so it certainly looks like I should go to a stiffer spring.
Have not found any similier words for the rear spring but that will be determined when setting the SAG.
(racetech states 200 lbs. is ideal for the rear spring..) we'll see. Thanks for the MX tech link...

I put the info in on the mx-tech site and this is what it said.

    Stock Spring Rates:
    Fork: 0.46 kg/mm
    Shock: 5.3 kg/mm
    Recommended Spring Rates:
    Fork: 0.46 kg/mm
    Shock: 5.5 kg/mm
    Recommended Springs:
    Fork: 4349546
    4349548
    Shock: 646726554
    646726556

It looks like stock is pretty close, or am I missing something??

I called my local shop, his comment was "I don't think you need to do the valves" I guess I have to find a new shop. The honda dealer was no help either. I guess it's just you and I. :)

Start asking about local tuners in your area. Get some names and ask about them with other riders. Go to the local MX track and ask about local tuners. Once you have some recommended names, go to their shops and talk with them about what type of riding you do and feel them out.

If you can't get any local guys, then you can go with RG3, Factory Connection, etc.

So, if I plan on jumping, Racing, and doing everything awesome (I weigh 155lbs) what springs should I get for my CRF150f?

If you plan on Jumping, Racing, and doing everthying awesome...ditch the 150F and (if the 150 "size" is what you really want) go to the 150R (probably should think even about the 250R at 155lbs...keep in mind, the 450 is factory suspended for a 160 lb. rider.) This is based on my assumption you're looking to do MX and your looking to do it in the 85 class (150) or the Lites class (250.)

The 150F has just about zero suspension and zero horsepower when it comes to actual racing. Can you take the 150F on the track? Absolutely you can...but not as a competition bike (unless you're racing other 150F (or similar) bikes.) To make a 150F a jumper/racer (if it could really even be done,) a bunch of money would have to be put into suspension and motor. Probably, by the time you're done sinking all the cash, bloody knuckles, and frustration into trying to convert a fun/pit bike into a racer, you might have been able to pay (or, at least, put a good dent into) the cost of a 150R/250R.

Don't get me wrong, the 150F is a good bike. I'm not bagging on your choice of bike at all. As a matter of fact, we had one and loved it. Just being honest with you about the 150F's capabilities as they relate to actual competition racing.

I went to get the spanner to loosen my rear suspension. Then I looked and wondered how to get it in there. The guy at the shop suggested hitting it with a punch and hammer to loose in then use the same to tighten it. Any thoughts.

Yup...hammer and punch. I use the same method. I don't use an actual "punch" as the tips of those things can be pretty sharp and leave dings in the lock nut. I use a small steel bar, but with a flatter end that fits more exact in the slots of the lock nut.

You can upgrade the suspension to CR85 showa forks and rear shock for about 600 bucks if you watch the ebay auctions and you will need to get springs fro cannon race craft
for your weight and type of riding you want to do you will need the .44 springs for the cr85 forks and get a 6.2 for the rear cr85 shock .
you have to be fairly handy to do the conversion .
It works the treat for the bikes ride but you are still dealing with a 11 hp motor
