Are most shops performing the same tasks?

    by whoya » Sun Dec 10, 2006 5:03 pm

In other words, should I have the local suspension guy perform the work on my x or is it necessary to ship them to one of the big guys?

I mean they both will look at the tables for my weight install the reccomended springs, do the revalve and set the clickers somewhere in the middle, right?
Do I have to worry about the quality of the parts? What is the advantage of shipping them off to the well known shops? Opinions appreciated.......

Difficult question to answer quantitatively. I had mine done by the local expert (in Bakersfield) and I am extremely happy. Others have ridden my bike and seem to agree.

Have a friend that sent his to RG3 and didn't like the product, had the local expert do it and is extremely happy.

Know lots of folks that have sent them off to reputable shops and are extremely happy.

I haven't actually heard from too many that weren't happy no matter where they got done. This may be one of those items that you and I may not be able to tell the difference in because we don't push the machine hard enough to expose the deficiencies.

    Just my 2 cents..

Some local shops are reps for companies like Pro Action and Race Tech. I like using the local guys that help support racers at the local tracks. The guy I use is very helpful and knows what works on the tracks I race on. He is always around to answer questions and make adjustments.Just my .02

Same here. I have a local shop that does quality work, participates in all the local stuff, and is a 40+ fast guy. Also, always willing to personally answer questions...

Thanks for the replies. Thats basically what I was getting at. I checked the racetech website and the local guy I had in mind is actually listed as one of their affiliates.

It's McClain Motor Sports. He just got a new location, so you'll have to call information. His name is Billy McClain and he does really good work. Suspension front and rear runs about $450 ~ $500, springs and valving included.

I rode Joe's bike and it's like night and day over the stock bike.

The only thing I would say to anyone is to take it to a suspension shop over just a bike shop. Not saying bike shops don't know what they are doing, but suspension shops know all the extra little things that make the bike ride nicer. When I get the money, suspension will be the next thing done to my bike. We had my wife CRF250X done and wow it's nice. We had ESP do hers, so I'm sure they will do mine because they are nice and close to me.

If you live close to Joe's guy I would say go for it. The price is also real good.
