Off topic, advice? Considering a dual sport.

Seriously considering a 2005 Suzuki DRZ 400S for fun.

Any pitfalls?

I'll still have the 250x, so don't think I'm a traitor!

I only say yes because it is almost impossible to street legal a CRF in your state, and if your keeping the CRF for the trails, why not? The DRZ is a decent on/off-road bike. I am making my 450X street legal in the near future, just for the fact that I could cross my entire state on dirt with just a few stretches of asphalt in between and fuel stops mostly on "main" roads. It's something I've been wanting to do my whole life, and it's coming soon. I know a few groups that do dual sport rides that go for a week or 2, sounds like a blast to me :D

They are pigs, but in your state, what are the other options for a street legal dirt bike, without jumping through flaming hoops blindfolded and naked? The only other thing I could think of id find smoething like an 01 XR650R or something that has already been converted and is grandfathered in as a street legal machine. Out here in AZ, we can make almost anything street legal :P

Get the XR650R Pete! You can find a nice late model for cheap I'll bet! 8)

Not cheap, I just sold my 01 out here for $3800, and all the street legal ones I've seen in Cali bring close to $4500, just because they are already street legal. However, I can attest to the fact that you'll enjoy the XR more than the DRZ, they weigh the same, but the XR has better suspension and a TON more power, yet still very easy to ride, I loved that bike. If it wasn't for the fact that I broke a shift fork in it and cracked the case ( and it was sold that way) and the 450X being so cheap at the time, I'd still have it. As far as the breakdown it had, it was pure abuse, any bike would have broken when that one did.

My fully dual-sported 450X seems mighty small and slow on the road for any distance. If you ride it 70% on the road, you'll enjoy a bigger machine. My 800 VFR is sweet until the road gets even dusty. The Suzuki 650 would better if closing in on that 70%. The Honda 650 is a good idea. I'm lookiimng into 950 adventurer from KTM. $.02

That would be the ultimate on/off road machine, but what do they want for that thing, like $20k? Plus I bet there is a waiting list. The XR650R is a great bike from 80mph all day all the way to tight nasty single track, it carries its weight well.

Brand-new, ready for Dakar-type cheese: 13-14K
Off Craig's List/eBAy: 8-10K

Friends of mine have Suzuki's and KTM's: Both are fine for 'what they do'.

The hard part is figuing what you're gonna do...plan for the opposite.

I'm sort of the other way around, I've been riding my Suzuki DR350S that was massaged by Cycle Gear for the last twelve years until I got my new 2006 X. I still have my Suzuki for a loaner bike or to use as a dual sport, but It's a night and day difference from the X. It keeps up with my riding buddys, but they aren't all that good. It's really a fair fire-road bike, but can be ridden on the trails if you know what your doing.
