    CRF450x uncorked fuel economy

    by krza » Fri Feb 12, 2021 9:13 am

I have a 2006 450x that is set up for Baja pre-running. Uncorked, JD jetting for sea level, stock bore forged piston, 2008 450r cam, T4 can, Clarke 3.4 gallon tank, geared 15-48.

I've only ever used it in Baja, otherwise I just garage it. I've never done proper fuel economy tests and fuel range can really run the gamut down in Baja depending on what part of the peninsula. I'm wondering what's the best estimate for fuel economy with this setup. 30-35 mpg? Or is that a high estimate?

I know with mine , but mainly running woods and some sower desert stuff , I average about 45 , if you are going flat out I would say that your estimate is probably close , so with your gearing .... 80-100 miles ?? , maybe to a tank ? ... at speed , if cruising , maybe 110 ... since you would not always be at a constant throttle , your not going to get 150 miles on a tank but 100 is not out of the ordinary , but that is not holding it wide open all the time , and just for short bursts , you should get decent mileage ....

Right on, thanks for the reply! I'm planning to try to hammer out the WABDR in a single (long, like 15 hours straight) day this summer, and I need 120 mi of range for the longest sections. Seems like 120 mi would be a gamble with the 3.4 tank, it would suck to get stranded. I might have to put a rack and a 1.5 gallon Rotopax on it, or carry some soft bladders.

Yea , for me to be safe .... when I go on "uncertain" rides ..... I usually carry 2 Gatorade bottles on my backpack filled with gas (my backpack has 2 mesh holders on the outside that will conveniently hold a quart bottle each) , the bottles wont leak and I get 2 qts of gas , and yes I also have one of those rack containers , but the Kolpin brand , I bungie it to my PMB rack for a extra 1-1/4 gallons if I am out in the desert as I have done 100 mile local desert rides before and ran out once ...... that was before my 3.2 and the last time I ran out .... ,

So if you did that and had 2 Gatorade bottles , you would not have any issues with almost 2 extra gallons .... That is what I would do if I was unsure .... as the mileage can vary widely depending on terrain , speed , and if the engine is fresh rebuilt it will use more gas than a worn in one , so keep that in mind as well .....

All good thoughts. I might actually grab a 3 liter Desert Fox soft fuel bladder, seems pretty rugged and has lash points to tie/hook it to the outside of a backpack.

I'll report back on my fuel economy findings!

I always liked the MSR fuel bottles that are used for camp stove by hikers and climbers.

Dearer than the gatorade bottle but a bit tougher too.

I think the older ones are better as the paint on the newer ones don't like petrol/ gas. Maybe it is when we went to unleaded fuels.
